The Startup Weekend successfully took place last August 26th to 28th. Participants went home with new connections, acquired knowledge, experience in project management, and some of them, with $5,000 dollars. Our BCoE team wants to celebrate all the participants for their hard work and excellent presentations! As promoters of blockchain-based technologies, we want to highlight the Web 3.0  track winners by recognizing their success in our EPIC Blockstars Spotlight.

Mentored by the University of Arkansas Faculty and powered by Startup Junkie and the Venture Center, the Startup weekend kicked off last Friday with selected pitches and teams formed. From the Web 3.0 track, the participants were trying to solve problems that include how to manage and share health data, how to motivate people to pick up trash by gaming, what value can we find with NFTs in the film field, and the winner, how to potentiate DAOs activities with a human capital management system.

“Move” is the name of the winning Web 3.0 project. The creators of the idea are two friends: Simon Mahns from Computer Science and Astrophysics, and Elliot Paschal from Economics. They both attend the University of Chicago and traveled to Fayetteville after hearing about the event through the radio.

Move’s goal was to discover how to manage communities in a decentralized way. Their solution takes aspects of responsibilities typically held by Human Resources departments and supervisors, specifically on/off-boarding, payroll, direction, and quality control, and codes these aspects into an automated smart contract – specifically for Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (or DAOs) to use.

From the startup weekend, both Simon and Elliot agree that focusing on an idea with a team while working in workshops and with mentors is a great way to make progress, meet great people from the community and collectively work on projects.

“Events like this will take our idea out of the ether and make it into a real-life thing” – Simon Mahns

“Outside the reward, these events are great ways to meet people around the community with similar interests. For us, that was very valuable because we got to meet some of the most Web3 invested folks from around here” – Elliot Paschal.

Elliot and Simon are an example of creativity and teamwork.  With their experience, we want to inspire our readers to take advantage of any opportunity to grow professionally and personally. Startup Weekends and similar events are a great way to do it; obtaining the value that goes beyond a prize.
