Dear Students Enrolled in Greek 1003,
I am delighted that you have enrolled in Greek.
Often students want to know what to do to get a ‘head start’
in the class, so I am sending you the Web address of the syllabus (with
some tips for success in this class), which also contains our assignments.
I heartily invite you to begin your studies immediately by looking at the
syllabus, course
schedule, Greek alphabet, Pronunciation
Guide (MP3) and the first assignments in
our textbook ATHENAZE BOOK
1 (2nd
edition), by Maurice Balme and Gilbert Lawall. You must have the second
edition: the one with the picture of the Temple of Nike on the cover. Please
purchase your textbook as soon as you can, and bring it to the first class.
I have ordered the book through the University Bookstore
in the Arkansas Union.

It will be most helpful if you begin now to practice writing
the letters of the Greek alphabet, and to begin reading the first words
and sentences in our textbook. On the web site I have included my own renditions
of the letters, and leave space for you to try your own versions of them.
The textbook also gives you a guide to writing the letters. You should practice
as much as you can before class begins, because we will be writing Greek
letters from the very start of class.
Please read the INTRODUCTION of the book and work on Part IV “Practice in Pronunciation
and Writing”. Of course, you cannot ‘imitate your teacher’ in pronunciation,
but you SHOULD listen to the
MP3 files linked to this site. It will help you to sound out the words
yourself, along with the Pronunciation Guide in your text.
When in doubt about how to write the Greek letters, use
my handwritten guide on this site (Greek alphabet)
— in preference to the guide in the textbook.
