GREEK 1003. ASSIGNMENTS:  FALL 2022. UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS. Professor D. B. Levine

Please be sure to prepare for each class, as outlined below.  Keeping up with our work will be satisfying and fruitful. Please be prepared to hand in each homework assignment at the end of each class. 

Week 1

August 22 Monday – Introduction and WELCOME TO GREEK 1003. Pup Quiz on Parts of Speech. You may review Parts of Speech here: http://www.butte.edu/departments/cas/tipsheets/grammar/parts_of_speech.html . You may also read about the parts of speech in A Student Handbook of Greek and English Grammar, pages 3-8.

August 24 Wednesday – Read pages 1-7: Alphabet and Sounds of Greek. Complete for class:  Exercise A (p. 2) odd numbers; Ex. B (p. 6) odd numbers. Please listen to the recordings of these words on our web site.

August 26 Friday – Read pp. 7-10: Accents. Complete for class: Exercise C (p. 10) 1-15. Read aloud the numbers on page 10. Please listen to the recordings of these words on our web site.

Week 2

August 29 Monday – Read 13-18: Grammatical Outline. Complete for Class: On a sheet of paper, explain the uses of the five cases (Nominative, Genitive, Dative, Accusative, Vocative), with an example (in English) of each one. On the same sheet, explain the difference between verb voices (active, passive, middle), with an example (in English) of each one. If you need help after reading pages 13-18, please consult A Student Handbook of Greek and English Grammar, pages 14-16.

August 31 Wednesday – Re-read 13-18: Grammatical Outline. Complete for Class: Readings (p. 19). What are the Greek words for “Parts of Speech,” “Noun,” “Gender,” “Number,” “Case,” “Person,” and “Participle”?

September 2 Friday – Begin Lesson 1 The First Principal Part of Verbs. Read 21-26. Complete for Class: Exercise A1 (p. 26) odd numbers; A2 – 1, 4, 8, and include English translations of each form. Memorize vocabulary on pages 24-25.  Say them aloud, and think of English cognates.

Week 3

September 5 Monday – Labor Day. No Class. Study Greek!

September 07 Wednesday – Re-read 21-26: Verbs: Present Indicative. Complete for Class: Exercise A2 – #3, and #7, and exercise 3 (p. 27) odd numbers. Ex. A4 (page 27) # 20-27.

September 09 Friday – Read 28-37: Nouns (first and second declensions); Articles. Complete for Class: Exercise B1 (p. 37) # 1, 3, 7, 8; B2 even numbers. Memorize vocabulary on pages 33-34. Think of English derivatives, even for those where the author does not give one, like θεός, πόλεμος.

Week 4

September 12 Monday –  Review the functions of nouns (p. 28-9); Read p. 38 – Instrumental Dative. Complete for Class: Exercise B3a (p. 38), # 1-10 and #19; Exercise B3b (p. 39) # 2, 7; Exercise B4a – 1, 3 , 8; Readings (page 40) 2, 6, 8, 11, 12.

September 14 Wednesday – Lesson II. Read 43-47: Imperfect Active and Middle Passive; εἰμί. Complete for Class: p. 46: A1 – 15-20, A2a # 1, 4, 7, A2b #2, 5; p. 47: Ex. A3a – odds.

September 21 Wednesday – Lesson 2 continued. Re-read 43-47. Complete for Class: p. 47: Exercises A4 even numbers, Ex. A5 – #2, 5, 6, 9. Memorize the present forms of the verb εἰμί (p. 45).

September 22 Friday – Read 48-54: Adjectives. Complete for Class: Ex. B1 (p. 55) # 1, 2; B2 – odds; B3  (p. 56) # 2-12 (evens); Memorize Vocabulary pages 53-54.

Week 6

September 26 Monday – Rosh HaShanah. Review.

September 28 Wednesday – – Articular Infinitive. Relative Pronoun.  Accusative and Dative of Respect. Read 52-55.  Read 56-7. Complete for Class: B4 (p. 56); B5 (p. 57) # 5-14.

September 30 – Friday Re-read 48-57: Adjectives. Complete for Class: B6 (p. 58) # 1-4; Readings p.58-60 # 2, 3, 5, 8, 10, 11, 16, 20, 21, 22.

Week 7

October 03 Monday – Lesson III: Future Active and Middle. Read 63-66. Complete for Class: Ex. A1 (p. 66) # 1, 2, 3; A2 # 1; A3 # 1-19 (odds); Memorize vocabulary (pp. 65-6), and be sure that you say out loud both the present and future tense forms. This will help you in the future (no pun intended).

October 05 Wednesday – Yom Kippur. Review. Re-read 63-65 on Future Tense. Complete: Ex. A1 (p. 66) # 5, 6; A4 – 2-30 (evens); A5 (p. 67) # 1, 2.

October 07 Friday – – First Declension Nouns and the Demonstrative Adjective-Pronoun. Read 68-74. Complete for Class: Ex. B2  (p. 74) # 1, 2, 3; Ex. B3; Ex. B4 (p. 75) # 1, 4; Memorize vocab. (p. 71-72).

Week 8

October 10 Monday – Genitives of Separation and Agent; ὑπό. Read pages 75-76. Complete for Class: Exercise B5 – 2-9, 23-27, 55-60; Readings p. 78-79: #1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12, 13.

October 12 Wednesday – Lesson IV: Aorist Active and Middle: The Third Principal Part. Read pages 83-86. Complete for Class: Exercise A1 (p. 86) # 1-10; Ex. A2 – 1-6; Ex. A3 p. 86 # 1-10. Memorize the first aorist endings (p. 84).

October 14 Friday – Formation and Conjugation of the Second Aorist. Read 87-91. Complete for Class: Exercise A4 p. 88 #1-6; A5 #3-6; A6 (p. 89) # 1-7;

Week 9

October 17 Monday – Fall Break.  No Class.

October 26 Wednesday – Complete for Class: Exercise C8  (evens).  Reading (p. 100): Plato’s Meno, through Meno’s 3rd line “οὐκ ἔμοιγε”; Memorize vocab., p. 98.

October 28 Friday – Lesson V: Third Declension Nouns. Read pp. 105-07. Complete for Class: Exercise A1 (p. 107) #1-11;A2 (p. 108) # 3, 5; begin to memorize vocab., p. 110-12 (starred nouns only).

Week 11

October 31 Monday – Third Declension Nouns. Read pp. 108-14. Complete for Class: Ex. B2 (p. 115) # 1-10; Ex. B3 (p. 115-16) even numbers. Continue to memorize vocab., p. 110-12 (starred nouns only).

November 02 Wednesday – Third Declension Nouns. Complete for Class: Ex. B4 (p. 116) # 1-3; Readings (p. 116-119) 1-5, 9, 20, 23, 25.

November 04 Friday – Lesson VI: Third Declension Adjectives. Read pp. 121-25.  Complete for Class: Ex. A1 (p. 125) #4; Ex. A2 (evens); Ex. A5 p. 126 #1-16. Begin to memorize Vocabulary on p. 123-24.

Week 12

November 07 Monday – Third Declension Adjectives, Continued. Complete for Class: Ex. A3 p. 125: #7; A4 (p. 126) any one of your choice; A5 #17-25. Continue memorizing vocabulary, pp. 123-24

November 09 Wednesday – – Result Clauses, Temporal and Causal Clauses, Conditions. Read 126-28. Complete for Class: Ex. B1 p. 129: #1-10.

November 21 Monday – Uses of Participles: Attributive, Circumstantial, Supplementary. The Genitive Absolute. Read pp. 140-45.  Complete for Class: A2a (p.141); A2b #5.  For the exercises above, parse every participle as you read.

November 23 Wednesday – Thanksgiving Break. No class.

November 25 Friday – Thanksgiving Break. No class.

Week 15

November 28 Monday – Uses of Participles, Continued. Tenses of the Particple. Read pages 146-151. Complete for Class: Exercise A3a (p.146); Ex. B1 (p. 151) form participles from four verbs of your choice.

November 30 Wednesday – Fun with Participles. Memorize Vocabulary, p. 150, and recite the first three principal parts of each aloud three times.  Complete for Class: Exercise B2 (p. 151) odds; Ex. B3 #1-15 and #40-48.

December 2 Friday – Fun with Participles. Complete for Class:  Exercise B4 (p. 152) #5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40; Ex. 5a #6, 7, 8; 5b # 1 and 4.

Week 16

December 05 Monday – Reading #10, p. 154: Deucalion (the Greek Noah).

December 07 Wednesday – Reading #11, p. 155: Perseus and the Gorgons. Last Day of Class.
