I would say that of all the movies that we watched this semester, Placido Rizzotto was my favorite movie. The way in which the story is told through the old man storyteller, which I believe is Placido’s father but the details of his identity is irrelevant. What is relevant is this film takes us away from the typical romanticized mafia movie that follows a seemingly linear plot in which a there are families or branches, then a feud, and eventually the someone gets killed in the end to bring the story to a close. As for Placido Rizzotto, we see a more realistic representation of the mafia and how people are typically affected by them. The life of Rizzotto was difficult at first with the arrest of his father and then having to be in the military, but it wasn’t all bad due to the fact that he got to see different places in Italy. However, if there is anything that those in control hate most, is when a shepherd begins to lead the sheep and since Rizzotto already had a higher sense of justice, he was meant to be a shepherd. Going back to the narrator aspect of the movie, I felt more engaged because the story was being pushed forward in a fashion that we are not accustomed to. In this movie, the spectators are also faced with a different use of the camera and it is best presented after the investigation begins. We are forced to reconsider who is the bad guy and who is the good guy each time additional information or in this case, each time the same scene is expanded. It is also worth mentioning that this use of the camera can actually teach us a valuable lesson about jumping to conclusions before seeing the full picture. Finally, I believe that this film depicts the consequences of defying the mafia better. Just like I cento passi and Gomorra, Placido Rizzotto shows how the mafia will not only take your life but will also go after those you care about most. This is how true criminal organization work when trying to send a message, they don’t think twice about the victims’ sex, age, status, etc. as long as it furthers their message.Furthermore, these three movie have one similarity and that is that these stories actually occurred. I’ve seen countless times in which a genre has fantastic fictional movie but once a real story comes to the stage, they typically beocme more popular.
