In math and in all the the fields that use math, often when we study the behavior of some system, we describe that behavior by how it changes over time. A deer is running. How far has it traveled? A bunny rabbit and its mother are hopping along at different speeds. How far is the baby from its mother? We pile up our legos, how does the shape change? We deposit money in our bank account and also earn interest. How much money do we have? A radioactive material decays. How much is left? A bunny population grows. How many bunnies are there this year? How much larger is the population than last year?
Many of these questions can be naturally understood and studied using recursion. This month, Dr. Andy Raich will lead us in an exploration of recursive sequences, looking at what can happen as you build up smaller and smaller changes over time. Stretch out those fingers, ’cause we’re going to do some calculator experiments!
