Counting Numbers, Drawing Numbers
Speaker: Edmund Harriss

Start counting slowly, start with zero. Imagine some object coming into view, you have 1, imagine another, 2, and another 3. You can make 3 a line or a triangle, you can think of it as 2+1, as 1+2 or as 3. Add in a further object, 4. A line or a square, 1+3, 2*2, 2+2. We can continue looking at each number in turn, exploring the ways it can be constructed.

Counting is the simplest of mathematical tasks, yet within that simple sequence of numbers we quickly come across questions and mystery, questions that have called to mathematicians for thousands of years, some of which are still not answered. You are invited to start your own exploration of this world.
