Mathematicians spend a lot of time trying to understand the foundational structure of things. Often objects that look very different actually have similar descriptions or behaviors that allow us to study them at the same time. It turns out that geometric patterns themselves often have a secret underlying structure that determines the entire picture. We’ll look at the symmetries of 2-dimensional geometric patterns and see if we can find that secret structure.
