Meet Ally Schaeffer

Ally Schaeffer is a senior in the College of Education and Health Professions. She participated in the Community Health Nursing service-learning study abroad in Ghana this past summer. Ally got to spend 3 weeks in Ghana helping in 2 healthcare clinics. She taught locals in the community about infant hydration, CPR, women’s health, and more. This faculty-led program will teach students about healthcare in a global setting by working together with nurses and doctors in a hospital and in clinics, where they will connect with local people and experience their cultures and traditions firsthand.

“In this program, I was able to grow immensely as both a person and a future nurse. While I was there, I saw my first birth, which was a c-section. This really impacted me because I want to become an obstetrics nurse after I graduate and it was my first experience in that field of nursing. This service-learning opportunity not only taught me so much about the nursing profession as a whole but also taught me a lot about myself.”
