Bobbi Thompson from Bentonville, AR and Jackie Reagor from Dallas, TX are U of A students majoring in Marketing & Hospitality. In fall 2018, they joined Dr. Wang’s service learning course HESC 455V Special Topics: Festival Management and Analysis. Here’s what they say about their service learning experiences!

Is it your first time taking a service learning course?

      Yes

Describe ways in which the service learning experience is different from the traditional classroom approach to learning.

You get to apply the learning to an actual event. You get to interact with industry professionals.

Describe a time when you had to use problem-solving skills during your experience.

During the program we had plenty of problems to solve. One time we had to come up with solutions to make the fair we were working with more kid friendly. My partner and I created an app that had resources and fun for all ages. We also worked on a solution for pet policy and parking issues.

In your opinion, what are the biggest benefits of service learning courses? And what was your biggest take?

The realness of it. In all other classes you sit and hear things but you really do not get to see your learning and ideas affect a real life situation. You get to have a well rounded knowledge of the topic.

Describe your most moving experience during your service-learning course.

Getting to meet an actual start up business owner. She started in her garage and taught us that anything is possible if you are willing to sacrifice.

What is your number one piece of advice you would offer to a future service-learning student?

Be prepared and dress for the weather if you have outdoor learning. Be open minded about the experience and fully engage to get the full experience.
