Madeline Mays is a senior in Marketing Department at the University of Arkansas. This spring, she is taking Nonprofit Marketing (MKTG 4513) taught by Dr. Molly Jensen, who is also one of the service learning committee at the University of Arkansas. Read on to learn more about her service learning experience.

1. Is it your first time taking a service learning course?

Yes!

2. Describe ways in which the service learning experience is different from the traditional classroom approach to learning.

The service learning experience is a way to apply knowledge in the classroom into real-world situations. This non-traditional way of learning allows students to gain valuable skills and experiences that you would not get from a traditional classroom approach. Students are able to problem solve, think on their feet, and react to unforeseen circumstances. Service learning is a way for students to get out of their comfort zone, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and to gain valuable experiences which they can call upon for years to come.

3. Describe a time when you had to use problem-solving skills during your experience.

Throughout our Nonprofit Marketing class, each student was paired with a local nonprofit in Fayetteville, AR. Our job was to help them in some crucial aspect of their organization. In order to figure out how to make the greatest impact on our nonprofit, we were given a lot of freedom to make decisions. I had to use problem solving skills in order to create a sustainable program for teaching women at a communal living center about how to create a resume and interview for jobs. I created a presentation with different advices and many supplemental resources so that the facilitators could teach this lesson for years to come.

4. In your opinion, what are the biggest benefits of service learning courses? And what was your biggest take away?

I believe that the biggest benefit of service learning courses are the confidence which comes with completing the task
involved. I never expected to have an experience like this during my time at the U of A; however, I was able to rise to the challenge! Throughout this experience I have learned about my individual strengths, and I have also been able to identify areas in my life which I need to improve upon. Ultimately, through this service learning course I have realized that I can conquer any problem or circumstance put in my path.

5. Describe your most moving experience during your service learning course.

While working with a local nonprofit, I experienced many moving experiences. The best moment for me was when the women from the communal living center genuinely thanked me for teaching them about resume building and interviewing skills. It made all of the hard work worth it. I will remember their appreciative smiles for a long time.

6. What is the number one piece of advice you would offer to a future service learning student?

Soak it all up! The course will go by really fast but try to enjoy every moment of the experience. Welcome challenges and realize that you are capable of overcoming them. Service learning is an opportunity that not everyone gets, so enjoy it!
