Sloan Clay from Paris, TX and Allison McAfee from McKinney, TX are U of A students majoring in Hospitality. In fall 2018, they joined Dr. Wang’s service learning course HESC 455V Special Topics: Festival Management and Analysis. Here’s what they say about their service learning experiences!

Having the best time during Service Learning at the War Eagle Fair

Is it your first time taking a service learning course?

Yes

Describe ways in which the service learning experience is different from the traditional classroom approach to learning.

We were able to be interactive during this project. We had the opportunity to work in person at the fair which allowed us to see more behind the scenes of what it takes to put on such a huge event.

Describe a time when you had to use problem-solving skills during your experience.

We were given issues before the fair that we had to focus on. So, while we were there we focused on what we could come up with make it better by using our surroundings.

In your opinion, what are the biggest benefits of service learning courses? And what was your biggest take?

Being able to be hands on allowed us to learn even more because we were interactive and able to come up with some of our own ideas that could help make the War Eagle Fair even better.

Describe your most moving experience during your service-learning course.

Meeting the vendors and being able to hear their story and where they came from. One vendor, Simply Unique, stood out to us the most and really touched our hearts. Being able to hear what she has to say about life made us feel so special.

What is your number one piece of advice you would offer to a future service-learning student?

Put your heart into it and be involved because this is what gives you experience for any future events you could possibly be a part of!
