The E-waste roundup is just around the corner! But why do we collect E-waste?
First and foremost, there is a lot of it!
- Electronic waste is the fastest growing part of the solid waste stream
- About 3 million tons of electronic waste enters landfills each year
- Roughly 250 million computers will become obsolete within 5 years
- Computers are discarded as frequently as every 3 to 5 years
So… we have a lot. But why recycle it?
- They are made with valuable materials!
- Steel, glass, plastic, gold, silver, platinum, palladium, copper, tin, and zinc
- For every million cell phones recycled, 35,274 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium can be recovered
- To avoid environmental degradation and harm to human health
- Avoid the need to mine and process new materials
- Saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions
- Avoid the need to mine and process new materials
- Computer wastes that are landfilled produce contaminated leachates that could eventually pollute groundwater
- Acids and sludge from melted E-waste can acidify soil, stripping it of nutrients
- Many electronic items can leak mercury and cadmium
Okay… so how do we dispose of E-waste properly?
- Washington County residents can bring their E-waste to the County Household Hazardous Waste drop-off located at 2615 Brink Drive in Fayetteville (call 479-444-1725 for details)
- Madison County residents can bring their E-waste to the Madison County Materials Recovery Facility located at 173 Madison 6553 in Huntsville (call 479-738-6351 for details)
- Free Geek Arkansas is an educational and computer re-manufacturing non-profit located at 240 N Block Ave in Fayetteville that takes electronics for no fee(call 479-966-9512 for details)
