Project Green Challenge Sign-up Event

Student Sustainability Club is hosting our official Project Green Challenge Sign-up event this Wednesday from 1-5pm in the Union Mall. Product samples, raffles, and door prizes will be available. Informational booths will be held based on the themes of Project Green Challenge and students will be able to sign up for it right there in the Union Mall. Project Green Challenge is a 30-day eco-lifestyle challenge available to all high school and college students that offers prizes and rewards for completing sustainability-themed activities during the month of October. We would love to see as many students as possible participate! You do not have to be a member of the Student Sustainability Club to participate.

NWA Open Space Plan Public Input Workshop

The next round of public workshops is scheduled for September 2015. The Focus will be on the draft plan and draft implementation strategy. Each meeting will feature the same information and will have two identical presentations at 4:00 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. with Q&A following each presentation.

Leaf A Legacy Studeent Leadership Workshop

University Housing’s new student leaders are invited to join a task force dedicated to making the residence halls more sustainable. Attendees will work with existing student sustainability leaders on campus. Together, they will brainstorm how to tackle sustainability issues facing University Housing. Another topic will be how to work collaboratively with similar organizations on campus and within the community.

Join students from campuses across the country for a game-changing weekend of social justice organizing skill-building in Kansas City! With a focus on concrete campaigns for economic justice and labor solidarity, you’ll also have the chance to learn from experiences organizers in the movements for immigrant rights, women’s and LGBTQ+ rights, environmental justice, anti-human trafficking and more! Explore one of the most charming Mid-West hubs, Kansas City, with cool leaders interconnected in the global movement for justice!

International Chamber of Commerce Photographic Award 2015

The International Chamber of Commerce Photographic Award 2015 is a celebration of artistic skill and outstanding photography which aims to draw attention to—and stimulate dialogue around—the global challenge of climate change. The Award invites professional and amateur photographers from all over the world to submit applications reflecting on the theme of #OurClimate: from the causes and impacts of a changing climate, through to our response (past, present or future) to one of the biggest challenges facing humanity.

The Award entry period is from 1 September to 13 November 2015, midnight (Paris time).

Garden Workday at Tri Cycle Farms

Join us at Tri Cycle Farms every Tuesday from 3-6pm for a volunteer workday in the garden! As fall arrives we will be working in the fall garden, winterizing the summer garden and doing various other farm and garden related chores and activities. See you at the farm!

Mullins Creek Rain Garden Maintenance

Join BWA and the Watershed Conservation Resource Center for an evening of rain garden maintenance along Mullins Creek on campus at the University of Arkansas! Volunteers are needed to plant native plants and remove invasive plants for 5 rain gardens in this area. Check-in will take place at Lot 56, near the corner of Razorback Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Gloves, tools, and water will be provided for volunteers. Girl Scouts – Diamonds of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas Volunteer

We are constantly seeking volunteers to become troop leaders or to work as episodic volunteers for programs year round. Girl Scouts is an organization that celebrates environmental stewardship, and there are several different opportunities to serve in the Natural, Built, Managed, and Social Systems Areas. In addition, while we are a girl-directed organization, both males and females are encouraged to sign up! All volunteers will receive training opportunities to help you build relationships and create meaningful projects based around the Girl Scout Leadership Experience for the girls in your community. Whether you devote a few hours a week or only one day a year, the time you spend will be meaningful for you and our girls!

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities

Tri Cycle Farms’ Food Recovery/ Compost Crew

Every Thursday, we gather at Tri Cycle to sort through boxes of expired produce from Ozark Natural Foods, a local health food coop. We sort and weigh the food, feed some to our sweet chickens, and then add the rest to the compost. There is also usually plenty of still-good-looking, organic produce to share amongst ourselves! If you like veggies, chickens, or compost, come join us for a chill, fun volunteer opportunity while helping to prevent food waste in our community. Just meet outside the community house at the farm (1705 N Garland Ave) at 3:30pm on Thursdays!

Habitat for Humanity ReStore Assistant

Customer service is the primary focus for our ReStore Volunteers. Our ReStore staff will assign jobs as needed. Below are examples of the types of jobs you will be asked to do. Greet and assist customers as needed. Assist in cleaning, pricing, and organizing merchandise. Arrange items on display shelves and sales floor. Hang pictures and create decorative displays when needed. Rearrange furniture and other merchandise in all departments to ensure displays remain visually stimulating. Arrange special promotion displays as needed. Help keep aisles clean and safe. Assist with donation pickups if necessary. Light cleaning. Please dress appropriately for the weather. This is a warehouse environment with limited climate control. All volunteers must wear closed toed shoes. The Habitat ReStore is family friendly so please no short, shorts or inappropriate t-shirts.

Feed the Hungry and Homeless — House of Hope Rescue Mission

The House of Hope Rescue Mission is a “Day Center” for the homeless and needy. Our goal is to provide a place where people can come for shelter from the cold or heat, receive snacks, water and a hot meal while at our facility, get help with life skills and job searches. We provide showers, a place for clients to do their laundry free of charge, and a place they can receive mail. Clients can receive clothing and food from our pantry monthly.

There are multiple ways to volunteer at the House of Hope:

• Be a Greeter
• Work in the Food Pantry: Stock shelves, prepare food bags
• Help clients with laundry
• Prepare meals to serve
• Serve meals to clients
• Clean up after lunch
• Assist clients in finding needed clothing for day to day wear or job interviews
• Assist clients on computers (as available) to search for jobs
• Come to socialize with clients and be a friendly face
• Offer to assist with Bible studies
• Be available in the children’s room to play and read
