Razorbacks Read

Did you know that 14% of Arkansans are illiterate? Or that there is 1 age-appropriate book per 300 children in low-income neighborhoods in Arkansas? Here at the VAC, we didn’t know these statistics until recently. We invite you to join us as we host Razorbacks Read, a campus-wide book drive, in hopes of combating low literacy rates throughout Arkansas!

From October 21-24, the VAC, in partnership with Scholastic Books, JB Hunt, and Razorback Athletics, is hoping to collect 25,000 new and gently used books for 2,300 K-3rd grade students at 6 different schools around the state. There are multiple ways to become involved with Razorbacks Read!

1.) Bring gently used children’s books from home upon returning from Fall Break! Drop-off bins are located in each residence hall, the Union, the Honors College, AGRI building, Mullins Library, and the Fayetteville Public Library.

2.) Visit http://www.gofundme.com/razorbacksread to donate a new book through Scholastic Books!

3.) Volunteer for one of the many projects happening during the week of October 21-24 for Razorbacks Read! To learn more about these projects and to sign up, visit http://uark.givepulse.com.

Every Thursday, we gather at Tri Cycle to sort through boxes of expired produce from Ozark Natural Foods, a local health food coop. We sort and weigh the food, feed some to our sweet chickens, and then add the rest to the compost. There is also usually plenty of still-good-looking, organic produce to share amongst ourselves! If you like veggies, chickens, or compost, come join us for a chill, fun volunteer opportunity while helping to prevent food waste in our community. Just meet outside the community house at the farm (1705 N Garland Ave) at 3:30pm on Thursdays!
