The Office for Sustainability (OFS), in coordination with Associated Student Government (ASG), SOOIE, and University Programs (UP) invites you to join in celebration of Earth Week April 18-22.

Earth Week an entire week full of events, all leading up to Earth Day on Friday. Earth Day is an annual international event held on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Established as a part of the modern environmental movement in 1970, Earth Day is celebrated in 192 countries each year!

The OFS, ASG, SOOIE, and UP have arranged a week full of events for people of all ages to get involved. There will be learning opportunities as well as opportunities to participate in service projects.

Earth Week is an excellent opportunity to celebrate progress we’ve made while educating students about the challenges ahead,” —Eric Boles, director of the OFS.

All Week

There will be a design exhibition on display all week in the Anne Kittrell Art Gallery in the Arkansas Union featuring the work of a collaboration between Landscape Architecture and Biological Engineering students titled “A Sustainable Landscape for St. Scholastica Monastery.” A closing reception for this exhibition will be held on Friday April 22nd at 7 p.m.

Monday

Earth Week Kickoff with Watermelons and Info at the Union Mall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Documentary screening of Tapped: The Movie in the UP Theatre at 7 p.m. Viewers will receive FREE reusable water bottles.

Tuesday

Join OFS and ASG to “Pitch the Bottle” as they recycle in the outfield of the Razorback baseball game.

RED Talk Goes Green, a symposium modeled after TEDTalks, will take place in the Reynolds Auditorium at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday

A Dickson Bike Trail cleanup will be taking place from 2 to 4 p.m. Snacks and supplies will be provided, and official volunteer hours are available for students. Register to volunteer on GivePulse.

Thursday

UAPD is hosting an unused drug take-back event in front of the Arkansas Union from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Unused prescriptions are very harmful to the environment if they are improperly disposed of and also pose a danger to household members when kept.

Steven Reyenga (Marlon Blackwell Architects) will guide a LEED Building Tour of Vol Walker Hall, one of three LEED Gold Certified buildings on campus, at 11 a.m. Meet at the Peace Fountain (between Old Main and Vol Walker) to begin the tour.

OFS will host the Sustainability Capstone Poster Reception from 6 to 8 p.m. in the ARKU Connections Lounge. Posters will be displayed all day on Wednesday and Thursday for public viewing.

Friday (Earth Day)

The annual Earth Day Fair will be at the Union Mall from 11 to 2 p.m. This event has been a huge success year after year as community and campus organizations as well as businesses come together to share a common interest in sustainability.

The Fay Jones School of Architecture will be hosting a screening of the documentary film Rivers and Tides: Andy Goldsworthy Working with Time at 11:30 Am in the Shollmier Auditorium in Vol Walker Hall.

The 2nd Annual Earth Day MFA Poetry Reading will take place at 12pm on the NE Union Quad (near Mullins) during the Earth Day Fair. The event is co-hosted by the University Libraries and Fabula Bound. The event is also listed on Facebook.

The Mullins Creek Cleanup will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Those interested should meet at Lot 56 West; snacks, supplies, and volunteer hours will be provided. Register to volunteer on GivePulse.

Earth Day will last into the late hours with a sustainability-themed Friday Night Live event to take place on the Union Mall from 8:00 p.m. to midnight. Students will enjoy snacks and giveaways along with activities such as a clothing swap (bring your gently used clothes and find something new!) and flower pot decorating.
