The Office for Sustainability will celebrate Campus Sustainability Day on the Union Mall from 11:00-2:00 pm on Wednesday October 23, 2013. There will be limited snacks, a musical performance by Please Don’t Stop, a vendor fair and several speakers.
Dr. Kate Shoulders, co-chair of the Social Systems Workgroup and Assistant Professor in the Department of Agricultural Education, Communication and Technology, will host a solar oven demonstration on the Union Mall. Dr. Shoulders and her students will warm breadsticks and marinara sauce for all. Students are encouraged to come and learn about solar oven construction techniques and applications while they enjoy an afternoon snack.
Several campus and city representatives will be present to discuss resources available to students both on and off campus. Dr. Tahar Messadi and Dr. Marty Matlock will discuss academic opportunities in sustainability.
James Brown, head of Recycling with the Razorbacks, will recruit students to help with a tailgating event on November 2, 2013. Athletics will participate in the EPA’s Game Day Challenge and need help recycling material that would otherwise be sent to the landfill. If you cannot attend the event but would still like to help the University of Arkansas in the Game Day Challenge, you can email James at jab021@uark.edu.
City of Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan will discuss sustainability-focused partnerships between the UA and the City.
The Community Services Division of the City of Fayetteville will offer information on how to receive free Energy Efficiency and Weatherization Kits for qualifying low-to-moderate income residents of Fayetteville. The kits are intended to improve living conditions and reduce energy usage and cost by installing simple energy efficiency upgrades to dwellings. Each kit includes energy efficient light bulbs, caulk, weather stripping, low-flow faucets and several other essential energy saving items.
Don Bennett from Tri Cycle Farm, a local urban agricultural center, will discuss the many departmental partnerships with Tri Cycle Farms and ongoing opportunities for student engagement.

Campus Sustainability Day is a time to recognize the successes, challenges, and innovation of sustainability in higher education on each campus. It is a national event supported by Second Nature and AASHE: Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.
