It’s the end of the semester, and who wants to come back in January to an office full of clutter and unwanted stuff? This Friday it will be easier than ever to clear out some of those old files and electronics without overflowing your tiny trash bin.
Unwanted Documents
The folks at the University Archives in the Mullins Library want you to think twice before you toss those files wholesale. That’s why they’re hosting a presentation covering what they consider “non-current official materials of enduring value that document the institutional memory of the University.” Maybe there’s a reason you just couldn’t bear to throw out those years-old meeting minutes after all. The presentation will be held at 10:00 AM in Mullins 104. “Office managers, administrative assistants, faculty and staff who manage files are especially encouraged to attend.”
And don’t forget: any papers you do decide to get rid of should be recycled, not sent to the landfill.
Old Electronics
If you’ve got unused or broken electronics sitting around somewhere, this Friday happens to be the University Bookstore’s monthly e-waste drop-off day. Any non-university-owned electronics can be taken to the Garland Center dock/University Computer Store between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Accepted items include:
- Computers
- Laptops
- Printers
- Copiers
- Scanners
- Servers
- Cell Phones
- Tablets
Unplug for the Holidays
And while you’re pondering what you’ll do with all this new free space, take a quick mental inventory of what you have plugged into your wall outlets. Chances are, most of it can be unplugged before you leave next week for the winter break. The UA Sustainability Council is launching a campaign to eliminate unnecessary “vampire” power consumption while the campus is virtually unoccupied. Even if you turn your electronics off, they still draw some power while they are plugged in. That’s why taking an extra minute to unplug before you go can make a big difference.
