HE Washing Machines & How They Can Help You

What is a HE washing machine?

A high efficiency washing machine!

High efficiency machines use less water and dry clothes better in the spin cycle.  This saves energy used to heat the water and energy needed to dry the clothes.

Why would I want one?

What are the benefits?

  • Saves you money on utility bills.  Energy Star states up to $135.00 in savings each year.
  • HE machines are easier on clothes.  There is less wear & tear because of the gentler spin cycles and lack of agitator, which also means greater capacity.  HE washers work differently than the agitator models, which submerge clothes completely and beat the soils out of clothes with the agitator.  HE washers use a tumbling model with less water.
  • Most high-efficiency washers use at least 50 percent less water
  • 80 percent of the energy used by a washing machine goes toward heating the water
  • More customizable to wash clothes the way you need them to be washed.  This results in cleaner clothes and maximum efficiency.

Tips for Use

  • High-efficiency washers require concentrated detergent that is formulated to clean with less water and produce fewer suds than normal detergent — leaving no residue on clothes.
  • Most major laundry detergent manufacturers offer high-efficiency products, and they’re clearly marked with an “HE” label.  Detergents can be dry or wet but make sure to read your owner’s manual for acceptable soaps.
  • Don’t use normal washing detergent.  It could flood the machine because HE washers use less water.
  • Read the manual and use the settings to properly handle the laundry load for max efficiency.
  • Keep the door of front-loading washers open so that excess water can evaporate.  and remove clothes promptly after the wash cycle is finished.  This will prevent mold from developing.

How do you use it?

It’s just like any other washer…but different.

  • Put in the HE detergent–wherever that specific machine requires it, put in the clothes, customize settings, start the wash.  Be mindful to not interrupt the sensing cycle.
  • Depends on the machine.  Make sure to read your owner’s manual.

Tips for Buying

  • A new high-efficiency machine can cost anywhere from $700 to more than $2,500 (compared to traditional machines that range from about $600 to $1,600). However, the savings can make up for the difference in price.
  • High-efficiency washers can also be attained cheaper through rebates ranging from $100-$200. Rebate programs change often, so use Energy Star’s Special Offer/Rebate Finder to browse current deals.
