Meet Lauren Hake. She is a sophomore in Elementary Education from Kansas City, Missouri. Lauren has always been interested in living a sustainable life and setting an example for others. When the position of the Director of Sustainability was introduced in RIC last year, she eagerly applied. Now that she has the position, the Office for Sustainability wants the University student body to know what she is doing for campus.
This semester, Lauren wants to see that Hydration Stations are installed in each residence hall, that Razorbucks are an acceptable form of payment at the local farmer’s market, and to create a virtual green room for the sustainability website. She has already created a sustainability flyer with tips and information about living a greener lifestyle on campus. This flyer can be found next to recycling bins in residence halls.
Lauren is taking on events next semester with Campus Conservation Nationals, Recycle Mania, and teaming up with the Vice President of National Residents Hall Honorary to create a sustainable Friday Night Live for students. Attend these to support RIC and their efforts in sustainability.
If you are interested in sustainability on campus, Lauren urges you to work with with one of the many groups available. These include Student Sustainability Council, Green Thinkers, Roots & Shoots, and the Sustainability Living-Learning Community. Students can also drop by the Office for Sustainability, where questions and enthusiasm towards sustainability are always welcome. Lauren is more than happy to help students with an idea they may have. She encourages anyone who wants to get involved, but doesn’t know how to email her at ricsus@uark.edu.
