Many of you are considering a meaningful way to “engage in community service, research, or other relevant work” and fulfill your capstone requirement. As you do so, please consider becoming a mentor for the Students Involved in Sustaining Their Arkansas (SISTA) Project.
SISTA is a University of Arkansas organization sponsored by the Brown Chair in English Literacy that helps high school students from all over Arkansas design sustainable business plans for their communities. Mentors are needed for the following projects:
-Two students from Armorel High School have proposed the creation of a “panic button” phone application that can share information with police quickly and efficiently when a child goes missing.
-A second proposal from Armorel High School details restoring the historical sections of Eaker Air Force base, used during the Cold War, to promote tourism and education in Blytheville, AR.
-A student in Manila, AR has proposed the creation of an after-school tutoring program to advance education and provide recreation for students in Mississippi County.
-A proposal from Buffalo Island Central High School discusses the creation of a shelter for homeless dogs in Mississippi and Craighead Counties.
If you are interested in mentoring students from a select proposal or would like more information, or to become a SISTA mentor, contact Julia Paganelli MarĂn at jpaganel@email.uark.edu by January 31, 2017.
