Building on the long standing success of Campus Sustainability Day (historically held on the 4th Wednesday in October), AASHE is inviting campuses to join us in celebrating Campus Sustainability Month throughout the month of October! The month will provide an unparalleled series of opportunities to engage and inspire incoming students and other campus stakeholders to become sustainability change agents.

The Office for Sustainability and Student Sustainability Club have been working hard to bring you an amazing series of events all month long. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to join us at all of the following events to come together and learn about and show support for sustainability on our campus.

October 1st – 31st: Project Green Challenge

Project Green Challenge, sponsored by Turning Green, is a 30-day eco-lifestyle challenge available to all high school and college students that offers prizes and rewards for completing sustainability-themed activities during the month of October. Throughout the month of October, daily challenges will be delivered to registered PGC participants by email each morning. Themed challenges are live for 24 hours and participants will be asked to complete actions and upload deliverables to gather points. Top content will be awarded prizes daily. Challenge participants will be asked share photos, videos, and text on this site, as well as across TG Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube digital platforms.

October 2nd: Know Tomorrow

On October 2nd, the United Nations will be meeting to discuss the real solutions that members of its council can take to prevent climate change. Know Tomorrow is a nationwide call for college students to show their support for affirmative action against climate change. Across the nation on October 2nd, Know Tomorrow events will be held at many different college campuses for students to get involved and show support. Join the Residents’ Interhall Congress, Associated Student Government, and the Student Sustainability Club on the Arkansas Union Mall between 10 Am and 2 Pm to discuss different ways in which climate change effects YOU and pledge to make a difference.

Students can register to participate online or by sharing posts with the hashtags #KnowTomorrow and #KnowTomorrowUniversityOfArkansas on social media.

October 9th: 2nd Annual Bike Fest

Win Me FlyerThe Office for Sustainability and the Outdoor Connection Center are excited to be co-hosting the second annual Bike Fest at the University of Arkansas on October 9, 2015. The event will take place from 12:30-3:30 Pm. Bike Fest is aimed at promoting cycling on and around the University of Arkansas campus and encouraging more citizens to think about cycling as an alternative mode of transportation. So grab your bike if you’ve got it and head over to McIlroy Avenue where you can:

  • Register your bike for free
  • Get information, advice and tune-ups from the pros
  • Compete in a “slow bike race” (last one to finish is the winner)
  • Enter a raffle to win a free bike and other prizes
  • Enjoy free food and beverages

October 15th: World Food Day Just Eat It Film Screening

Filmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of food waste from farm, through retail, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping and survive only on discarded food. What they find is truly shocking.

 

11x17-Just-EatIt-posterCelebrate World Food Day by raising your awareness of the dual issues of food waste and hunger. Students, faculty, staff, and the community at large are invited to attend a free screening of this acclaimed 2014 documentary that might change the way you think about food. The event will be held at 6:30 Pm on Thursday, October 15 in the Poultry Science Auditorium. The student group Razorback Food Recovery will begin with a  discussion about food recovery efforts on the U of A campus, and there will be a post-film discussion to reflect on insights and impressions gained from the film.
