A Message from Professor David Hyatt

Hello students in the sustainability minor;

Are you interested in taking a summer class in the first session?

Are you a junior or a senior?

Are you interested in the idea of Sustainability in Business?

If so, read on!

I am offering this class, WCOB 3023 this summer. Through a quirk it was not listed in ISIS for several days so I am sending out this notice. This class requires no previous knowledge of business.

This class is designed to help you:

  • Develop an understanding of sustainable development as an important element of practices and a value driver for businesses and other organizations
  • See how economic, environmental and social issues are an integral, interrelated (and complex) part of the landscape in which institutions operate
  • Gain awareness and literacy regarding global environmental and social change
  • Apply your understanding of sustainability at three levels: societal, organizational, and individual. Identify next steps to better leverage sustainable development.

See the link below for a flyer for the class. Contact me for more information at dhyatt@uark.edu.

Urban Bee Habitats and Gardening Conservation

Bee Specialist Don Steinkraus demonstrates and discusses bee varieties and their habitats, which support conservation and the environment in urban and near-urban settings. While honey bees are the most commonly recognized bee variety, the mason bee, crown bee, bumblebee, leaf cutter bee, and other beneficial pollinators adapt well to the town-country setting. Dr. Steinkraus will discuss and present slides of common bees before opening the session to questions and examinations of bee housing and habitat care equipment.

Conscious College Road Tours: Turning Green

The non-profit organization Turning Green is visiting the University of Arkansas as a part of their Conscious College Road Tour this Thursday, April 16th. The Tour aims to inspire and mobilize college students around conscious living and sustainable practices. The goal is to encourage students to make educated choices in their day-to-day lives that benefit the health of both people and the planet. The Conscious College Road Tour travels to 16 university campuses to host Conscious Information Stations to educate students about simple changes they can make towards a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

The stop will include two segments during the course of the day. The first will be interactive stations set up in the Union that will provide students with a chance to learn about ways to better their lifestyle in terms of the health of ourselves and the environment.  This will take place from 11 – 3 pm. Following this event will be a Town Hall Meeting where TG collaborates with students and school administrators to implement a sustainability initiative on campus. This dinner and discussion will be from 6 – 8:30 pm in Ozark Hall Auditorium. Chipotle will be provided.

City of Fayetteville Recycling Survey

The City of Fayetteville has a goal of diverting 80% of its waste from the landfill by 2025. Currently, we recycle or compost 20% of our waste and landfill the remaining 80%. The majority of the landfilled waste could potentially be recycled or composted. To reach our goal of 80% waste diversion, the entire community will need to be involved. Therefore, we would like your input on how to improve our existing recycling program and what new strategies should be put in place.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

Project Clean Plate

Project Clean Plate is a campaign initiative sponsored by Chartwells Dining Services and Razorback Food Recovery whose purpose is to raise awareness to food waste and mindful eating habits in college students. Project Clean Plate will begin with dining halls capturing a baseline measurement of food waste for one week. This will be followed by two weeks of the campaign in which food waste and mindful eating education will facilitated in and around the dining halls by volunteers.

Volunteers are needed to table during dinner hours in each of the three campus dining halls – Brough Commons, Pomfret Hall, and Fulbright (Quad) Dining Hall. Volunteers will engage with students to raise awareness for the Clean Plate Project through games, trivia and recruiting signatures for the Clean Plate Pledge. Volunteers who serve for at least one hour will receive a free Clean Plate Project t-shirt and a free meal in the dining hall.
