Sustainability in Business

Sustainability in Business (WCOB 3023/5023) is being offered in the spring by Professor David Hyatt. This is a great elective for the sustainability minor and a required class for the graduate certificate in sustainability. It meets Thursday evenings from 6–8:45 Pm. The course focuses on theoretical and practical bases for pursuing sustainability in business and society. Students learn four definitions of sustainability, measured on four axes expressed by: 1987 UN Brundtland Report (intergenerational equity), Triple-play (people, planet, profits), resource sustainability, and economic justice (fair global system of rules, fairly enforced). The class is designed to help you:

  • Develop an understanding of sustainable development as an important element of practices and a value driver for businesses and other organizations;
  • See how economic, environmental and social issues are an integral, interrelated (and complex) part of the landscape in which institutions operate;
  • Gain awareness and literacy regarding global environmental and social change; and
  • Apply your understanding of sustainability at three levels: societal, organizational, and individual. Identify next steps to better leverage sustainable development.

If you have any questions about this class or SCMT 4853/WCOB 5843 Cross-Sector Collaboration for Sustainability, please contact Professor David Hyatt at dhyatt@uark.edu.

Volunteer Opportunities

Peace at Home Santa Sack Setup or Santa Sack Day

Each year, Peace at Home Family Shelter hosts “Santa Sack,” an event where the families we work with and who live in our shelter come to pick out Christmas gifts. Children go with a volunteer to pick out gifts for their mothers and moms go with volunteers to pick out gifts for their children. Everything then gets wrapped up by our volunteer wrappers for the family to take home or back to the shelter to open on Christmas day. For this event, we rely on donations of new toys and gifts for ages 0-adult. We also are looking for donations of snacks and treats for the day of the event. If you would like to donate new toys or food for the event on December 11th, please email Eva Laurin at elaurin@peaceathomeshelter.com.

We are still in need of a few more volunteers to help make our annual Santa Sack event a success. Specifically, we are in need of extra volunteers for event setup on Thursday, December 10th anytime 10am-5pm and on Friday, December 11th for the evening of Santa Sack – 4pm-8pm. If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please contact Maria Torres at mtorres@peaceathomeshelter.com

Tri Cycle Farms’ Food Recovery/ Compost Crew

Every Thursday, we gather at Tri Cycle to sort through boxes of expired produce from Ozark Natural Foods, a local health food coop. We sort and weigh the food, feed some to our sweet chickens, and then add the rest to the compost. There is also usually plenty of still-good-looking, organic produce to share amongst ourselves! If you like veggies, chickens, or compost, come join us for a chill, fun volunteer opportunity while helping to prevent food waste in our community. Just meet outside the community house at the farm (1705 N Garland Ave) at 3:30pm on Thursdays!
