Application Deadline for Sustainable Practices in Panama Study Abroad Program

The deadline to apply for the Sustainable Practices in Panama Study Abroad program is October 31st. If you are interested in joining in on this trip, there is still time for you to submit all application materials, including a faculty recommendation.

This program offers students a great opportunity to learn about sustainability practices in another country, all while earning three credits toward their sustainability minor in less than two weeks. That’s right, this course is a Tier 1 elective.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

Zero Waste Recycling Survey

The University of Arkansas and the Chancellor have a goal to be Zero Waste by 2021. Help the U of A reach this goal by volunteering for the Office for Sustainability in the Walton College Zero Waste Pilot Project.

Volunteers will:
Collect data about recycling bins in the Business Building
Survey building occupants on opinions and thoughts about Zero Waste
Enter the collected data in an Excel spreadsheet

A short 15-minute training session will be required for all volunteers. Hours will be flexible and based on the volunteer’s schedule from 8 to 5 during the week day. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work as many hours as they need, and the volunteer opportunity will be available for about 3 weeks from September 29th to October 31st. All help is welcome! Volunteer hours do not need to be consecutive.

Make a Difference Day 2014

Make a Difference Day is a national day of service sponsored by USA Weekend magazine and the Hands on Network/Points of Light Institute. The Volunteer Action Center works with over 40 nonprofit organizations, schools and parks to develop meaningful service projects all over the Northwest Arkansas area. This year Make a Difference Day this year will be on November 1, 2014.

You can sign up individually or as a group. There are too many projects to fit in this email, many of which are sustainability-related. The OFS Team is excited to be lending a hand at TriCycle Farms. If you’re like us, you’ll have a hard time choosing just one project.

Walker Park Neighborhood Recycling Outreach

During the week of Saturday, November 1st to Thursday, November 6th, the City of Fayetteville will be conducting a door-to-door recycling survey in the Walker Park neighborhood to better understand what drives our residents to recycle and also to help determine the barriers that keep some residents from participating in our recycling program. We will need volunteers to help ask questions and record results from our door-to-door survey form from 9AM-noon on Saturday, and Monday-Thursday 9AM-noon and 4-6PM. It is extremely important to arrive on time at the beginning of your volunteer time slot, so that we can go over instructions. All volunteers will receive some RecycleSomething swag to take home!

There will be a brief ‘training’ before actually going door-to-door, to give some tips for speaking to the residents, and explain how the project will work. Therefore, volunteers must arrive at the beginning of the time slot, to insure they get the important instructions before we start. In addition, we will be walking up and down numerous streets in this neighborhood, so volunteers will need to be able to walk about a mile or so.
