Capstone Experience in Sustainability

There are only seven seats remaining in SUST 4103 for the Spring semester. If you need to complete your capstone in order to graduate at any time in 2015, please meet with Dr. Boss (sboss@uark.edu) as soon as possible to discuss your project. If you have not yet identified a project, we know of several opportunities, and have announced them in past emails. Please remember that SUST 4103 is now only offered in the Spring semester.

Events

UnPlug for the Holidays

The UA Sustainability Council wants you to celebrate the holidays this year knowing that, while campus is closed, we’re saving more energy than ever. During break, our power consumption only drops from 12 megawatts to 9 megawatts. We know we can do better. Much of that energy use actually comes from electrical devices that are turned off but still plugged in. Anything that is plugged in still draws some electricity, so that is why we are asking everyone on campus to unplug their electrical devices before leaving campus. If everyone does their part, the university could save as much as $37,000 over the holidays.

Please don’t just do your part, but make sure to share this campaign with your peers. Equipment that should be unplugged includes:

  • Computers, computer monitors, video monitors
  • Power strips
  • Chargers
  • Printers, copiers
  • Space heaters
  • Office lights
  • Refrigerators, microwaves, coffee-makers, other small appliances

Nature Journaling Workshop

Project Learning Tree and the Arkansas Environmental Education Association will be offering a six-hour workshop on Nature Journaling this March. This workshop will demonstrate various ways to utilize the powerful tool of nature journaling. It unlocks creativity; hones observation skills; provides a window into the past; and is the data collection backbone of the scientific process – all while reinforcing important record-keeping skills such as reading, writing, and drawing. Science, technology, engineering, math (STEM), language arts, art, history, and even music can be addressed using PLT activities and nature journaling practices.

There will be a registration fee of $25, which includes lunch, snacks, and all workshop materials. Registration will open online on Wednesday, December 17th at http://www.arkansasee.org/

TriCycle Farms

Tri Cycle Farms, located at the corner of Sycamore and Garland Avenue, is a centrally located urban farm on the blue and red bus routes (free parking is also available at the Trinity United Methodist Church). The mission of Tri Cycle Farms is to “build community through soil,” and the nonprofit (via fiscal partnership with the OMNI Center for Peace, Justice and Ecology) is working broadly with other like-minded organizations in the region to strengthen food security. Tri Cycle Farms has ongoing “Farm to Table” programs, gardening classes, volunteer opportunities, chicken husbandry, herb walks, a composting system, and new plans to develop a farmer’s market with the Trinity United Methodist Church, which is directly across the street from Tri Cycle.

Contact Don Bennett at fayettevilletricyclefarms@gmail.com or 479-966-0572, or Joanna Pollock at jbperson@uark.edu or 708-828-5695 for more information about how to get involved or tour Tri Cycle. You can also find Tri Cycle Farms on Facebook.
