Research Fellow from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to Speak Today

The challenges in realizing the dream of photoelectrochemical water splitting will be explored by seminar speaker, John Turner, a research fellow with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Forty years after the first reported photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting experiment, commercial hydrogen production from PEC is still a dream. Thousands of papers later and no semiconductor system has been identified that has the potential for economical hydrogen production from PEC water splitting. The majority of the past research has been directed at metal oxides due to their expected low costs, ease of synthesis and stability. Little progress has been made; efficiencies for these oxide systems are abysmally low, primarily due to poor electronic structure.

Internship Opportunities

City of Fayetteville Dark Sky Project

The City of Fayetteville is seeking a student to assist with minimizing ambient light levels as part of the STAR reporting and certification program. The project would require a student to work with the city’s GIS Department to identify commercial, residential and natural areas in Fayetteville for evaluation in the Bortle Dark-Sky Scale. This project would be ideal for a student to use for a Capstone Experience and would likely be most appropriate for a student working on a major or minor in astronomy.

Contact Peter Nierengarten, Sustainability & Resilience Department Director, at pnierengarten@fayetteville-ar.gov if you are interested.

Food Recovery Network Fellowships

Food Recovery Network is hiring two full-time fellows: one to join the Member Support team and one to join the Expansion team in the national office in College Park, MD for the spring 2015 semester. Fellowships are 19 weeks, starting on January 5 and ending on May 15, 2015. Fellows receive a $1,500 per month stipend plus a modest benefit package.

Applications will be considered until positions are filled; priority deadline is 11:59 pm Eastern, December 14, 2014. Find job descriptions and application instructions here.

Founded in September of 2011, Food Recovery Network (FRN) is the largest national student-led food recovery movement working to bring food recovery programs to colleges across the country. Made up of over 100 chapters at colleges and universities, FRN has recovered over half a million pounds of food and is rapidly expanding.
