Food For Thought Lecture
Kathleen McLaughlin, president of the Walmart Foundation and senior vice president for Walmart Global Sustainability, will provide this year’s second “Food for Thought” lecture. Her lecture is titled “Business and Society in the Next Decade: Using Scale and Capabilities to Address the Complex Problems Facing the World.” The lecture series is sponsored by the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences at the University of Arkansas
McLaughlin’s visit is open to all students, faculty and staff, as well as the public.

The Student Sustainability Club (formerly Student Sustainability Council) will be having a member meeting from 6-7pm this Wednesday in the Sustainability House. Discussion topics will include upcoming events and what sustainability means to the individual student.

Nature Journaling Workshop
Presented by the Arkansas Environmental Education Association (AEEA) in cooperation with Project Learning Tree (PLT), this workshop will demonstrate various ways to utilize the powerful tool of nature journaling. It unlocks creativity; hones observation skills; provides a window into the past; and is the data collection backbone of the scientific process – all while reinforcing important record-keeping skills such as reading, writing, and drawing. Science, technology, engineering, math (STEM), language arts, art, history, and even music can be addressed using PLT activities and nature journaling practices.

Dig In Food and Farming Festival
The festival celebrates local food, farms, and gardens with films, classes, discussions, a keynote speaker, local food, opening reception, information and vendor fair, seed and tool exchange, and children’s workshops. Friday’s opening reception will be held at Fairlane Station, and Saturday’s activities will take place at the Jones Center. Registration is required.

Recycle Your Old Books During ‘Better World Books Drive’ in March
The University of Arkansas Office for Sustainability is kicking off the Better World Books Drive on Monday, March 2, in conjunction with RecycleMania, a nationwide recycling competition among college campuses to emphasize the importance of recycling and waste management. All types of books – hardback and paperback – can be dropped off, including but not limited to, textbooks, novels, and children’s books.
The Better World Books Drive will end on Tuesday, March 31.

Volunteer Action Center Board Applications
Volunteer Action Center Board Applications are now being taken! Students interested in being on the leadership for teams like Dream B.I.G., VAC Literacy, Events team, Full Circle Campus Food Pantry and Razorback Food Recovery should apply. Students gain skills in leadership, programming, volunteer management and fundraising. Plus they hone skills they use to manage the day to day operations of our signature programs, those include: volunteer training, curriculum development, event planning, partnership development and client management!
Application deadline is Friday, March 6th.
Riparian Project: Native Planting and Cleanup
Volunteers can help remove litter from Mud Creek near Academy Sports & Outdoors in Fayetteville and/or help plant native grasses and tree seedlings along the streambank for the Illinois River Watershed Partnership’s 8th Annual Riparian Project. This project grows tremendously every year, so we have 7 planting/cleanup sites to choose from in NWA on March 7! IRWP will provide trash bags, gloves, and water for all volunteers. Shovels and other tree planting tools will be limited.

RESCHEDULED! Middle Fork of the White River Cleanup
Beaver Watershed Alliance is hosting a cleanup of the Middle Fork of the White River this Saturday. The event will take place from 10 am to 2 pm. Volunteers should meet at Bunch Park in Elkins at 10 am, and return at 1 pm for a free meal and door prizes. All supplies including trash bags, gloves, and trash pickers will be provided. Town Branch Cleanup
Water and materials that flow into Town Branch eventually end up in Beaver Lake, the drinking water source for 420,000 Arkansans! We need your help to Keep Arkansas Beautiful and make sure that our drinking water source is clean for future generations. A volunteer appreciation lunch will be served following the cleanup. Volunteers needed for Arkansas Farm to You Exhibit at Bayyari Elementary School
Bayyari Elementary School is hosting an exhibit called Arkansas Farm to You on March 31 and April 2. The exhibit is designed to teach students about agriculture, nutrition, and the importance of having a healthy lifestyle. Volunteers are needed to be station presenters (there are nine different stations). Presenters are needed at each station for morning and afternoon shifts. Easy to understand scripts will be provided ahead of time. The only requirement is enthusiasm for working with children! Questions can be directed to Bayyari’s FoodCorps service member Rachel Kraus at rachel.kraus@foodcorps.org.

TriCycle Farms
Tri Cycle Farms, located at the corner of Sycamore and Garland Avenue, is a centrally located urban farm on the blue and red bus routes (free parking is also available at the Trinity United Methodist Church). The mission of Tri Cycle Farms is to “build community through soil,” and the nonprofit (via fiscal partnership with the OMNI Center for Peace, Justice and Ecology) is working broadly with other like-minded organizations in the region to strengthen food security. Tri Cycle Farms has ongoing “Farm to Table” programs, gardening classes, volunteer opportunities, chicken husbandry, herb walks, a composting system, and new plans to develop a farmer’s market with the Trinity United Methodist Church, which is directly across the street from Tri Cycle.
