Fall Community + Campus Sustainability Mixer

Please join the Fayetteville Forward Green Economy Group and the University of Arkansas Office for Sustainability as we host the 4th Community + Campus Sustainability Mixer. This year we will be holding the popular casual networking event at U.S. Pizza on Dickson Street on September 23rd from 5:30-7:30pm. All students are encouraged to stop by this casual tabling event. Local community and campus organizations should come prepared to greet new faces and discuss opportunities for service learning, internships, job opportunities and collaboration. There will be free pizza while supplies last.

Study Abroad Fair

The annual Study Abroad Fair will be held from 10:00am-2:00pm on Tuesday, September 23 in the International Connections Lounge located in the Union. Sustainable Practices in Panama will have a table, so come find us if you would like to ask any questions or talk to the trip leaders, Professor Boss and David Samudio, in person. You will also find information about funding your trip using scholarships and other financial aid.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

Native Plant Volunteer Day at the White River

The Watershed Conservation Resource Center is hosting a volunteer event to perform maintenance activities at their streambank stabilization site on the White River in Fayetteville. Volunteers will be removing invasive plants, collecting native seeds, and planting natives at the site. Volunteers will meet at the WCRC office (380 W Rock St. in Fayetteville) and drive to the White River Restoration Site.

Holt Middle School Community Garden Work Day

In Holt Middle School’s Community Garden we are growing plants, growing minds, and growing together! It is time get some work done to prepare for our fall and winter gardens. We will have a workday this coming Wednesday the 24th.  We’ll be out there from 3-5 pm and can use all the help we can get! This will be a great chance to work with kids (5-7th grade) and connect with other members of the community. No previous gardening experience is required!

Razorback Food Recovery in Pomfret

We have a brand new opportunity, recovering from a Dining Hall! We are starting in Pomfret Dining Hall and we need volunteers. The deadline for applications has been extended to Wednesday, September 24th by noon. Applicants can email their applications to recovery@uark.edu or bring them by the Center for Community Engagement (Arkansas Union A643).

Waste Management at Bikes, Blues, & BBQ

Waste Management – Even though none of us want to think about it one of the most crucial jobs during the rally is managing the trash. Volunteers switch out trash bags, placing them in designated locations to be picked up and taken to dumpsters. Bikes, Blues and BBQ is well-known for the how clean the streets are kept, with guests often commenting on this. However, it takes a dedicated and special volunteer to help with this!

Butterfield School Garden & Grounds Work Day

Butterfield School is having a Garden & Grounds work day. They will need help with weeding, mulching, and planting perennials in Butterfield’s outdoor classroom area (rain garden, butterfly/pollinator garden, raised beds for veggies & herbs, compost demonstration area, etc.).  If there is enough help enough help, they’ll weed, trim & mulch around the school’s trees & shrubs too!

Volunteers can arrive at any time and stay as long as they like. No registration is required. Email Garnett Wise (gwise@wm.com) with any questions.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore Assistant

The ReStore is a discount home improvement center open to the public that accepts donations of new and gently used building materials, furniture, and appliances and sells them at greatly reduced prices. Customer service is the primary focus for our ReStore Volunteers. Our ReStore staff will assign jobs as needed.

They Fayetteville Public Library is inviting UA sustainability students to get involved by volunteering at the library. Volunteers can set their own hours and choose from a variety of programs and departments.
