Our Projects

The Center for Agricultural and Rural Sustainability (CARS) has a broad responsibility in research, teaching, and extension with respect to different aspects of agricultural and rural sustainability. The projects carried out by the Center faculty are diverse covering all major areas of agricultural production including animal and livestock, rice, forestry and timber, soybeans, specialty crops, local foods, etc. Our work provides the unparalleled support to the agricultural industries and rural communities to build sustainable, “green” agriculture in the State.

The CARS waste management program focuses on the handling, treatment, and reuse of poultry litter.
The Food Industry Program is research, education and outreach focused on strengthening farm to retailer connections and promoting locally produced foods.
CARS researchers have been developing and delivering risk management information to producers for over eight years.
CARS is actively engaged in projects that address water quantity and water quality management.
The food, fiber, and forest industries play an important role in supporting both national, and regional economies across the United States.
According to Arkansas Farm Bureau, Arkansas ranks first among rice-producing states, accounting for more than 46 percent of U.S. rice production
