This Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) brings together leading researchers in areas of violence, mental health, and extremism at the University of Arkansas to provide up to 10 students opportunities to learn innovative analytical approaches for studying some of today’s most pressing social problems.

The cohort of selected students will live in apartments (The Marshall) near the University of Arkansas for the 10-week program. Travel and living expenses will be covered the REU program, and students will receive a weekly stipend.

Students will choose “research communities,” including Terrorism and Homeland Security, Hate Crimes and Hate Speech, and Health and Justice Inequities. They will be provided one-on-one and group mentoring, as well as hands-on training in research methods and social data analytics. Particular attention will be given to helping students make connections between academic and practitioner work in crime, health, and justice-related data analytics, as well as build social networks to better prepare students for graduate school matriculation and success.

The REU site is designed to provide an in-depth research experience for students who have an interest in social data analytics broadly, but with a focus in the following areas:

(1) Terrorism and Homeland Security
(2) Hate Crimes and Hate Speech
(3) Health and Justice Inequities

Each research community will be led by faculty at the University of Arkansas, many of whom lead nationally recognized research centers.

For more information on the research communities, please reference the Research Communities page.

Broadly, our goal is to train students to problem solve, learn to develop a research plan, conduct basic analysis of data, and communicate results of their research to diverse audiences.

Students will conduct original research projects with the potential to impact justice policy, develop crime prevention strategies, and create safer communities – all while interacting with representatives from government agencies, non-profit organizations, and corporations that engage in and employ individuals in areas of crime, justice, and health analytics.

Additionally, students will have the chance to connect with renowned scholars throughout the United States about their research and discuss graduate programs to which REU participants might apply.

Most broadly, we aim to equip participants with knowledge and skills in research methods and data analysis that they can take to their home institutions, graduate schools, communities, and the workforce.
