This Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) brings together an interdisciplinary research team at the University of Arkansas and criminology/criminal justice practitioners throughout the state to provide students opportunities to learn innovative analytical approaches for studying some of today’s most pressing social problems. A cohort of selected students will live on-site at the University for 10 weeks and participate in one of three “research communities” focused on a crime or criminal justice topic. Students will be provided one-on-one and group mentoring, as well as hands-on training in crime analytic research skills. Particular attention will be given to helping students make connections between academic and practitioner work in crime analytics, as well as build social networks to better prepare students for graduate school matriculation and success.

The REU site is designed to provide an in-depth research experience for students who have an interest in crime analytics broadly, but with a focus in the three key areas : (1) Terrorism & Hate Crime, (2) Community & Crime, and (3) Crime, Justice, and Health. Each research community will be led by faculty at the University of Arkansas, many of whom lead nationally recognized research centers, and include external mentors from across the nation. For more information on the research communities, please reference the Research Communities page.

Broadly, our goal is to train students to problem solve, learn to develop a research plan, conduct the basic analysis of data, and communicate the results of their research to diverse audiences. Students will be a part of a project team whose research findings have the potential to impact justice policy, develop crime prevention strategies, and create safer communities – all while interacting with external agencies, organizations, and corporations that actively work in crime analytics that will provide students with data-to-practice instruction. Additionally, students will have the chance to speak with renowned scholars throughout the United States about their research and discuss graduate programs to which REU participants might apply. Most broadly, we aim to equip participants with crime analytic knowledge and skills that they can take to their home institutions, graduate schools, communities, and the workforce.
