Exercise #1: Axis vs Label New sheet. Let’s look at things by Year – drag Order Date to Columns. If I then add a continuous pill, it creates an axis – drag Profit to Rows, change to bar chart. Now we have an axis showing profit measure for each year.

Exercise #2, Heat Map: New sheet, drag Order Date to columns again, drag a discrete item to rows, Market. See a series of panes.  To put numbers in those panes, drag Shipping Cost to color to create a heat map

Create Chart #1: Dates.

it is very important to understand the difference between continuous and discrete, since dates can be brought into the view either way. If the date icon is blue in the data window, then the default when we bring out that pill will be discrete, otherwise it will be brought out as continuous.

–Profit to Rows
–Order Date to columns.
We can see by the blue pill that this is a discrete date.  This means that each part of the date is treated like a category.
—Click the + on YEAR (Order Date) in  Columns
So when you drill down (click the + to expand to years and quarters), you have a separate section of the viz for each year, rather than one continuous line.
Produce a chart in a .jpeg file from this visualization and upload it to WordPress for the homework assignment.
Duplicate this visualization (cntl + click on the tab and duplicate). You will modify this for the next chart
Chart #2: Monthly profits.
Use the last chart with
–Profit to Rows
—YEAR (Order Date) and QUARTER (Order Date) into columns.
—Click QUARTER pill + for details on months.
—Analytics Tab (Upper left, next to Data), Drag Average Line to Pane
Produce an image of this chart and upload it to WordPress.
Also answer the following questions:
—Average Profit for 2011-2014 period?
—Which month had the highest profit and how much?
—Which month had the lowest profit and how much?
