Please contact Vicky Hartwell (hartwell@uark.edu, 5-4327) with questions, also gradfunding@uark.edu

If your students are looking for additional sources of funding, have them check out Pivot, a searchable funding opportunities and expertise database. To search for graduate student travel awards in particular, you may find it helpful to: Click on the “Advanced Search” link. Leave “All Fields” selected and enter “travel” into the search box. Click on “Applicant Type” and select “Graduate Student.” Click the blue “Search” button in the upper right corner of the page. Additional information and tips about using Pivot can be found online.

Additional Grants through the Graduate and Professional Student Congress (subject to availability of funds): The Graduate and Professional Student Congress (GPSC) is excited to offer funding for students traveling to present their own original work. The GPSC Travel Grant is funding “of last resort,” meant to help students who have already exhausted other funding sources open to them.  Currently, no travel grant shall exceed $500 dollars. FOJ Training: Amy Unruh

Writing assignments.
—One set of assignments is due every Sunday, typically an online quiz, automatically graded on Blackboard, and a news summary
—Another set of assignments is performed in class.
These lessons are on a Google Drive folder. Review of the folder
Assignment keys are in a different folder. Somewhat unhelpful
This folder needs to be cleaned up. Discussion on how to best achieve this

The typical class
—What to expect for the various classes.
—Try to get students to pay attention to how news is written
—They are to read USA Today, Washington Post, Arkansas Traveler, Democrat-Gazette, Arkansas Today
—Get students to focus on what is news and what is not news. Hard news vs features
—Make sure you ask students if they have discussed a particular lesson already during the lecture portion of FOJ – make sure the labs are on track with the lecture
—Short discussion. Then walking around and answering questions
—No teamwork allowed.
—Cheating. How students have cheated.

Blackboard
—Train students to write only in Microsoft Word and load the files correctly in Blackboard. This is harder than you would think
—Make sure you have access to your Jour 1033 sections prior to the start of class.
—Basic navigation on Blackboard. The Grade Book.
—Modifying deadlines for each class section. Amy will have further guidance on this.

Grading
—Strive for consistent grading across all sections.
—Discussion of rubrics
