Percent vs Percentage Point
At Lyon College, 67 percent of non-first-generation students paid back their loans within five years, while only 53 percent of first-generation students did the same, which results in a 14 percent POINT difference. The median debt for both types of students was the same though, at $12,000.
You mean “percentage point.” 14 percent of 67 is 9.4.

Numbers in the Newsroom
Sarah Cohen’s “Numbers in the Newsroom” is a classic in journalism numeracy. She is a Pulitzer-winning journalist at The Washington Post, a data journalist at The New York Times and has taught at Duke University and now at Arizona State University.
* Limit yourself to 8- 12 digits, including dates such as 2012, in a single paragraph.
–This allows us to stress the most important numbers
–Simplify using rates, rations or percentages. “One in four” = ratio or rate. “Forty percent” = ratio or rate. 235 deaths per 100,000 is another.
*Memorize some common numbers on your beat: Population of Fayetteville. Population of Arkansas. Population of the U.S. Per capita income Arkansas and U.S.
*Round off! Unless you’re dealing with really small numbers, decimal points may not be meaningful. “I’m a big fan of rounding,” Cohen said.
* Portion of whole – For example, at the time of the Million Man March in 1995, a turnout of 1 million black men would have represented 1/12th of all the black men in the country at the time.
Review: —Review Numbers in the Newsroom, through p. 25
Relative Risk
“Black applicants are denied mortgages at twice the rate of whites with similar incomes.”
if 20 smokers per thousand contract cancer, and yet non-smokers have a cancer rate of only 10 per thousand, the relative risk of smoking is 2.
“More than” or “less than” = compute difference between the smokers, an extra step

1) How much would an in-state student expect to pay for the 2017-2018 school year?
An in-state student would expect to pay $24,916 for the 2017-2018 year.
2) How much would an out-of-state student expect to pay for the 2017-2018 school year?
An out-of-state student can expect to pay $40,162 for the 2017-2018 school year.
3) How much more did out-of-state students pay in 2017-2018 than in-state student?
An out-of-state student can expect to pay $15,246 more than an in-state student.
4) Which category increased the most from the 2014-2015 to the 2017-2018 school years? Raw change? Percent change?
Percent Change: The total out-of-state student tuition increased the most with a percent change of 4.92% *Incorrect. Needed to compare to the 2014-2015 numbers.
Raw Change: It (the total out-of-state student tuition) also had a raw change of $4,008.
5) Write a lead for a story based on your analysis.
For the Fayetteville out-of-state undergraduate students at the University of Arkansas, tuition is on the rise at about 4.9 percent since the 2014-2015 school year according to the National Center for Education Resources. (good attribution, wrong number)
6) What other information and/or sources would help you finish this story?
I would have liked to have more information on why these categories are going up/down and if the tuition for out-of-state students is on the rise then does that also mean that the number of out-of-state students is also rising?

NICAR Exercise 2
Analyze the estimated tuition, fees and living expenses data for students to help you answer the questions below.
- How much would an in-state student expect to pay for the 2017-2018 school year?
- An in-state student can expect to pay $24,916 for the 2017-2018 school year.
- How much would an out-of-state student expect to pay for the 2017-2018 school year?
- An out-of-state student can expect to pay $40,162 for the 2017-2018 school year.
- How much more did out-of-students pay in 2017-2018 than in-state students?
- Out-of-state students paid $15,246 more in 2017-2018 than in-state students.
- Which category increased the most from the 2014-2015 to the 2017-2018 school years? Raw change? Percent change?
*Your calculations are incorrect. You compared to 2016 and not 2014.
- In-state students’ estimated expenses increased the most in the room and board living category. In the 2014-2015 school year it cost $9,454, and in the 2017-2018 school year it cost $10,704, which is a 3.6 percent increase or $1,250. *calculation should be on all expenses
- Out-of-state students’ estimated expenses increased the most in the tuition and fees category. In the 2014-2015 school year it cost $20,300, and in the 2017-2018 school year it cost $24,308, which is a 4.9 percent increase or $4,008.
Out-of-state tuition rose $4,008 from 2014-2015 to 2017-2018 at the University of Arkansas, a 19.7% increase, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
- Write a lead for a story based on your analysis.
- Out-of-state tuition and mandatory fees for undergraduates at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville has increased about 9 percent since the 2014-2015 school year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
- What other information and/or sources would help you finish this story?
- Why have fees gone up? Are we getting more funding from the state and outside donations? If so, why are there two categories that require students to pay more? With more students paying these fees, why have they still gone up? How does the university use this money? Do the students living in converted study rooms have a reduced rate? How do the university’s rates compare to other universities?
- I would talk to the Office of Financial Aid, the Office of Admissions, the Enrollment Services Division and University Advancement. I would also talk to students about how they feel about these increases.
Error in percentage change calculation. Very thorough and professional assignment. Next time, you can just post it on the blog itself.

- total out-of-state tuition increased the most with a percent change of 4.92% and a raw change of $4,008. *Incorrect. a 19.7% increase
5)Write a lead for a story based on your analysis.
- University of Arkansas out-of-state students can expect nearly a 5% increase to their tuition as the 2017-2018 school year approaches. ACCORDING TO???
6) What other information and/or sources would help you finish this story?
- I would like to interview both out-of-state and in-state students about both their feelings about these numbers but also on if they knew about these increases. I’d also be interested in talking to university administration- perhaps the treasury office- on some insight one why these changes in cost are occurring.
Your percentage change calculation was wrong. You needed to calculate against the 2014-15 numbers.

NICAR Exercise 2 – Katie Beth Nichols
Katie Beth – Great job on this assignment. The spreadsheet looked good and the answers are correct. Prof. Wells 10 of 10 points
An in-state student should expect to pay roughly $24,916 for the 2017-2018 academic year, according to the College Navigator National Center for Education Statistics. On the other hand, an out-of-state student should expect to pay $15,246 more, at $40,162 for the 2017- 2018 for the same academic year. According to the data, the category that experienced the largest percent change was books and supplies at a 25% decrease. However, the category that experienced the most raw change was out-of-state tuition and fees at a $4,008-dollar increase.
A potential lede for this set of data would be: UA tuition and fees have increased since 2014, nearly 14 percent for out-of-state students according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
To continue a story about the increase of fees over time, I would want to have some more information, data regarding scholarship information, the increases and decreases of financial aid over time, and I would also want to see the differences between the genders and races and how those factors affect the data. I would want to speak with the Office of the Registrar to see how these numbers affect enrollment, as well as see who I could talk to to see how budgets and the specific numbers are calculated on a yearly basis.

NAME. I HAVE NO IDEA WHO SUBMITTED THIS.
How much would an in-state student expect to pay for the 2017-2018 school year?
An in-state student living on or off campus but not with their parents would expect to pay $24,916 for the 2017-2018 school year. Correct
2. How much would an out-of-state student expect to pay for the 2017-2018 school year?
An out-of-state student living on or off campus would expect to pay $40,162 for the 2017-2018 school year. Correct
3. How much more did out-of-students pay in 2017-2018 than in-state students?
An out-of-state student paid $15,246 more than in-state students. Correct
4. Which category increased the most from the 2014-2015 to the 2017-2018 school years? Raw change? Percent
change?
Out of state tuition increased the most of all categories, with a percent change of 16% and a raw change of $4,008.
Incorrect: Out-of-state tuition rose $4,008 from 2014-2015 to 2017-2018 at the University of Arkansas, a 19.7% increase, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
5. Write a lead for a story based on your analysis.
Tuition for out-of-state students at the UofA increased by 16 percent in the past four years, with out-of-state students now expected to pay $4,008 dollars more than they did in 2014-2015, according to the National Center for Education Resources
6. What other information and/or sources would help you finish this story?
How do out-of-state students feel about paying more to go to the UofA? Especially since it seems they have been paying the bill for Gov. Hutchinson’s request for a flat tuition in Arkansas. I’d want to talk to them about it, as well as talking to administration about how and why they choose to raise or lower out of state tuition. How closely do they monitor the percentage of Arkansan students compared to other states? Do they have an ideal ratio? Aren’t they incentivized to advertise to other states because those students will pay higher tuition?
Excellent questions
Analysis of Data: The data clearly shows that tuition and fees for out-of-state students have risen more quickly than those for in-state students. You can see that out-of-state tuition and fees has risen 16 percent in the past four years, while in-state has risen only nine. Room and board are constants, although I’m skeptical of their estimate for off-campus housing being the same as on-campus. Which residence halls/apartments are they basing these numbers on?
It’s also interesting to note the sharp decline in the price of books and supplies, approximately 34 percent in the past four years. Strange, eh? Maybe this reflects a move towards e-books and openstax-style open source textbooks instead of hard copies that tend to be expensive. Or maybe it reflects the increased use of websites to find cheap used textbooks, including Amazon. That could be a backing statistic for another story about textbooks, since the prices and usefulness of college textbooks are always hot topics for students.
Your percentage change calculation was incorrect in the spreadsheet. Divide by the OLD number.

- Which category increased the most from the 2014-2015 to the 2017-2018 school years? Raw change? Percent change?
- Out-of-state: tuition and fees increased by $4,008 (4.92%)
- In-state: room and board increased by $1,250 (3.6%)
Incorrect: Out-of-state tuition rose $4,008 from 2014-2015 to 2017-2018 at the University of Arkansas, a 19.7% increase, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
The 2017-2018 academic year continued a steady trend of increasing student’s financial obligation that has been going on for at least the previous three years. In this year in-state students had an overall cost of $23,066. This amount was $12,090 less than the amount that out-of-state students paid. Room and board, books, supplies, and tuition and fees are all included in the $35,156. Both in-state and out-of-state increased every year. The largest increase from the 2014-2015 to the 2017-2018 school year differed between the two. Out-of-state tuition and fees increase by $4,008 or 4.92%, and in-state room and board increased by 3.6% or $1,250.
Write a shorter lead that gets to the main point:
Out-of-state tuition rose $4,008 from 2014-2015 to 2017-2018 at the University of Arkansas, a 19.7% increase, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
Talking to both in and out of state students would be excellent sources. I also think that talking to college recruiters and a representative in the admissions office could help shine light on what effect these increases have on the students. Also, I would talk to housing and see if the tuition increase could be pinned to a specific point or two.

Megan – Please put the assignment name and your name on the post heading. Your heading is too similar to the blog post headings I use for my class posts.
An in-state student would expect to pay $24,916 for the 2017-2018 school year, while an out-of-state student would pay $40,162. Out-of-state students pay $15,246 more than in-state students. Out-of-state tuition increased the most from the 2014-2015 to 2017-2018 school year. The raw change was $4,008 and the percent change was 20%.*Excellent, good job*
5) Write a lead for a story based on your analysis. – This lead needs to attribute the source of the data:
Out-of-state tuition rose $4,008 from 2014-2015 to 2017-2018 at the University of Arkansas, a 19.7% increase, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
Data shows a 20% increase in tuition for out-of-state students in the last four years.
Other information that would be important: How many in-state students vs out-of-state students attend the University of Arkansas? What scholarships are available for students? A good source would be someone who works at the Registrar and/or Financial Aid Office.

4) Which category increased the most from the 2014-2015 to the 2017-2018 school years? Raw change? Percent change?
Out-of-state tuition and fees increased the most out of all the categories, with a percent change of 16 percent and a raw increase of $4,008. The largest increase that was not tuition was for Room and Board, with a 12 percent increase and a raw change of $1,250.
5) Write a lead for a story based on your analysis.
Out-of-state tuition and fees have increased by 16 percent in the past four years, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Out-of-state students are estimated to pay $4,008 more than they did in 2014.
Incorrect: 19.7% increase
6) What other information and/or sources would help you finish this story?
I would speak to senior out-of-state students to see how they feel about these changes, and if they have noticed the increase in prices over the years and how they have handled them. I would also speak to the student financial office to see how if the amount given in scholarships have increased with tuition, and if not, why.
While tuition has increased for in-state students, out-of-state students have seen a 16 percent increase in tuition in addition to the price increases of room and board and other living expenses, compared to the 9 percent tuition increase for in-state students.
Out-of-state students in 2017 – 2018 pay $15,000 *INCORRECT: $15,246 * more than in-state students. The price for books and supplies have decreased by 34 percent, with $354 positive difference since 2014 – 2015.

*Your spreadsheet had the wrong percentage change calculation. See the instructions: Which category increased the most from the 2014-2015 to the 2017-2018 school years? *
Based on the data from College Navigator, out-of-state students paid $24,308 more than in-state students for the 2017-2018 school year. While an in-state student could expect to pay $24,916 for the school year, out-of-state students would pay $49,224 *Incorrect: it is $40,162*. The cost of room and board – for both on campus and off campus living – increased the most out of all of the other categories from the 2014-2015 school year to the 2017-2018 school year. The cost increased $1,250 from $9,454 in 2014-2015 to $10,704 in 2017-2018, which was a13% percent change.

Out of state tuition rose $4,008 from 2014-2015 to 2017-2018 at the University of Arkansas, a 19.7% increase. *
An appropriate lede for a story involving this data could be: The National Center for Educational Statistics reported the fees for out-of-state students during the 2017-2018 school year at the UofA were nearly double those of in-state students. Other information that could be useful for this story includes the number of out-of-state students versus in-state students enrolled during the 2017-2018 school year; the rate of out-of-state student and in-state student enrollment over the past five years could also be beneficial.
