Agenda for Monday, Oct. 8
–Context!
–Common Errors
Context #1
Add the Quick Facts for city population, demographics.
Little Rock: African American comprise 42 percent of Little Rock’s population. https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/littlerockcityarkansas,US/PST045217
Add typical salary from Occupational Employment Statistics database for Arkansas
https://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes_ar.htm
Common Errors – Math
Percent vs Percentage Point
At Lyon College, 67 percent of non-first-generation students paid back their loans within five years, while only 53 percent of first-generation students did the same, which results in a 14 percent POINT difference. The median debt for both types of students was the same though, at $12,000.
You mean “percentage point.” 14 percent of 67 is 9.4.

Research – Data Question
The Financial Aid department does not report loan repayment info to the Department of Education. “Once the students leave us we don’t track their information anymore,” he said.
Question: Look at data dictionary for source of this information. All 1,826 columns explained here.

Dashboard Workshop
Inspired by Megan Putney, we will continue forward on Tableau dashboards on Wednesday.
Here is some detailed guidance on your final assignment graphics and dashboards. I think these are good ideas. But if you have something better, let me know and edit this Google Doc. And we will discuss.
We will review some of Megan’s super Tableau tricks in class and then you will use a chunk of the remaining time to hammer out these dashboards and ask questions.

- Format Filters – See video below
- Use parameters to organize data: https://onlinehelp.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/parameters_create.htm
- Use sets to organize data: https://onlinehelp.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/sortgroup_sets_create.htm#Use
Let’s make good use of this time since the deadline is approaching fast.
King’s College Exchange Program – Interest?
We have been invited to partner with King’s College in New York, which offers a program that allows students to spend a semester there. They take a few courses, but the real incentive is that the program connects each student to a newsroom internship in New York, which would open doors for their careers that are difficult from Arkansas.
Participating newsrooms include CNBC, The New York Daily News, Brooklyn News, and Newsweek, and a host of others that is a mix of broadcast and digital and print. With tuition, housing, and credit hours, students would pay $12k for the semester — they would stay in the dorms on campus. It’s not a bad deal for a semester in NYC.
Informal poll – Anyone generally interested in this?
