Standard element name without suffixes

  • Use the standard element name for the following:
    • -elements by themselves (in the zero oxidation state),
      • NOTE: some are diatomic elements (H2, O2, N2, Cl2, Br2, I2, F2):
        • Examples:
          • Ag = silver
          • F2=fluorine
        • Other Examples:
          • Ag, Al, As, Au, B, Ba, Bi, Br2, C, Ca, Ca, Cl2, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, F2, Fe, H2, He, Hg, I2, K, Li, Mg, Mn, N2, Na, Ni, O2, P, Pb, Rb, S, Se, Si, Sn, Sr, Te, Zn

    • -monatomic CATIONS that stand alone as the ion: follow the element name with the word “ion”. All are metals (or hydrogen).
      • NOTE: variable oxidation states need a Roman Numeral in the NAME, NOT in the formula!
