Maintaining Image Quality

Have you ever found an image, but the size was just too small for your purposes? I recently had this issue with a logo, and needed to resize the image to make it larger. Whenever you resize the image, chances are the image will come out much more pixelated when you attempt to transform the overall size.

There are a few ways you can tackle the issue of resizing. In this post, I will show you two versions. One is a paid alternative with a free trial period. The other is a free alternative, with less resizing freedom.  In the end, they all seem to be equally as effective. The choice of which method to use comes down to the choice of the user.

PAID OPTION

ON1

ON1 is a Photoshop extension that you can download and add to Photoshop’s ‘Automate’ function.

Once you have added the extension to Photoshop, ON1 will open directly in your version of Photoshop.

  1. Open the image you wish to resize
  2. Hover over the “File” drop down menu and select “Automate.”
  3. From the “Automate” menu, select “Resize”
  4. With the ON1 window open, select the new dimensions for your photo.

ON1 is free to try for 30 days for both Mac and Windows users, but it must be purchased for full use. Prices start at $99.99.

FREE OPTION

GIMP

Gimp is a free resizing program. Unlike, ON1, Gimp cannot be added to Adobe Photoshop as an extension. Still, Gimp can be used to easily resize your images in a three step process. Once you have downloaded Gimp, open your desired image:

  1. Select “Scale Image” from the “Image” drop down menu.
  2. Once the “Scale Image” window opens, select the ‘Sinc’ feature next to ‘Interpolation.’

After you have completed those two steps, simply export your image.
