Collegiate Recycling Internship-Fall Semester

­Scope: The Boston Mountain Solid Waste District is currently accepting applications for their 2014/15 Collegiate Internship program. The Boston Mountain Solid Waste District is the state sub-agency tasked with managing waste and waste reduction throughout Washington and Madison Counties. This internship will be under the Environmental Education department and will focus on managing recycling infrastructure within the District with a specific focus on the University of Arkansas athletic department’s waste stream and community events. Interns will be given exposure to the complexities of managing a diverse waste stream and will access all sides of the industry from public engagement to movement and marketing of materials. They will be given a leadership role in the University of Arkansas’ athletic department’s recycling program and will be a partner in District education for public schools.

Responsibilities

  • Interns will be responsible for a minimum of 100 hours of work from date of acceptance until the end of the semester. This will include mandatory attendance for four of the six home football games, two of which must be Sep. 20 and Oct. 11 (when working during games you may or may not be in the stadium).
  • Interns will be held to a professional standard of communication and behavior with their supervisor, other professionals, the public, and fellow interns.
  • Interns may be in supervisory roles and must be comfortable managing people, time, and resources.
  • Interns may be working with public school children and must feel comfortable addressing groups of students.
  • It is the responsibility of the intern to complete and report all hours worked to their supervisor. To receive the internship stipend all hours must be completed by the end of the enrolled semester.
  • Interns should be comfortable engaging verbally with the public in a variety of venues.
  • Interns should be self-motivated and comfortable working in an autonomous environment with a focus on personal management of responsibilities.

Qualifications, All candidates must:

  • be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
  • be able to attend four of the six University of Arkansas home football games  (Oct. 11 is mandatory)
  • have access to reliable transportation
  • be able to pass a criminal background check

The ideal candidate:

  • Has a strong professional interest in environmental affairs
  • Is responsible and self-motivated
  • Is comfortable engaging with the public
  • Can manage groups of volunteers
  • Has professional verbal and written communication skills
  • Is punctual and reliable
  • Believes in the value of waste reduction and recycling
  • Takes pride and investment in her/his work

Incentives: Interns will receive hands-on experience within the professional recycling field. This is an all access internship meaning the intern will potentially be able to investigate and work within all aspects of industry that interest them. Outside of their commitment to the athletic department’s recycling program they will co-write the remainder of their job description with their supervisor at the beginning of their internship to fit the needs of the District and the desires of the intern. If desired, interns who have completed the program may request letters of recommendation from the District. Upon satisfactory completion of 100 hours of work each intern will receive $500.
