The Fayetteville Public Schools Sustainability Office seeks a dynamic and outgoing individual for a unique service opportunity working with students, staff, and community members to assess and improve school district waste reduction initiatives. Preference will be given to University rising juniors and seniors.
Position terms: Two 12 week terms – September 2014 – November 2014 and February 2015 – April 2015 (same individual may serve both terms)
Compensation: unpaid; office space will be provided; FPS Sustainability Coordinator will provide verification of hours served as needed
Availability: approximately 10 hours/week; flexible times depending on intern schedule and events – may include some evenings
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assess and document current waste stream and management, including:
- Visit each school to document current recycling strategies and systems
- Interview key staff members to understand waste generation, waste reduction strategies, and recycling programs
- Collect data and develop presentation and annual report section on waste numbers and management strategies
- Develop educational and promotional materials to encourage waste reduction and recycling
- Work with Green Teams to conduct cafeteria waste audits as requested
- Assist FHS Green Team students with implementation of new recycling program at sporting events
Minimum Requirements:
- Knowledge of and interest in community service and environmental issues
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision
- Ability to work as part of a team and individually
- Ability to relate to people from diverse backgrounds
- Good organization and communication skills
- Computer skills including Internet research, PowerPoint, and Excel
