Greeks Going Green (3G), a registered student organization on the University of Arkansas campus, has begun its fourth semester of promoting sustainable lifestyles among sorority and fraternity members.

3G is a national nonprofit organization with local chapters located on college campuses across the U.S. promoting sustainable living among Greek communities.

“Greeks Going Greens is an eco-friendly, student-run organization focusing on promoting sustainability initiatives throughout the Greek system,” said U of A Greeks Going Green President John Kilty.

3G’s goals are “to properly educate Greek life students on how to manage food waste, recycling and other important sustainability efforts,” said Kilty.

Each 3G chapter chooses to design and implement its own local campus sustainability efforts. At the U of A, sororities and fraternities are challenged to make one lifestyle change within their chapters to move toward more sustainable living.

“Last semester all of the houses competed in a white paper race, where each house was given recycling bins to recycle white paper,” said Kilty. “Each house then transported the paper to the recycling center once a week.”

The U of A 3G chapter encourages all members of Greek life to work together toward making the university more sustainable. The 3G officer committee consists of Greek leaders who work together to host and coordinate sustainability-related events.

“We currently have an exec board including a president, vice president, event coordinator, marketing chair and a secretary that serve on the board for a year,” said Kilty, “as well as one to two delegates from each fraternity and sorority chapter who are in charge of relaying information back to their respective chapters.”

3G will coordinate a few events and competitions between the sorority and fraternity chapters throughout the spring semester.

“We will be holding an event toward the end of the year where a sustainability award will be presented to the chapter who has the most points,” said Kilty. Points can be earned by participating in events throughout the semester, he said.

The University of Arkansas Office for Sustainability provides advice and support for 3G and its efforts to promote sustainability in the Greek system.
