Interested in getting outside, advocating for the environment, and building a community of service-minded peers? Check out the Sierra Student Coalition, the University of Arkansas’s student chapter of the Sierra Club.

The Sierra Student Coalition does regular cleanups on campus and local trails–in April, they worked with the Recyclebacks and NWA Water Quality Agent to remove 57 tires from a trail off West Cato Springs Road.

“I joined the club because I wanted to help the environment while meeting like-minded students on campus,” sophomore Olivia Elshoff said. “The Sierra Student Coalition (SSC) believes that every human being has a right to a clean and healthy environment and therefore is obligated to protect and restore the environment and the organisms that depend upon it. The SSC aims to connect members to the environmental issues they care about by serving our community and environment, especially through trail cleanups. We additionally connect with the environment through outdoor activities, such as hiking and the occasional camping trip.”

Nationally, the Sierra Club has nearly 4 million members and is one of the most longstanding environmental organizations in the United States. The Sierra Club was instrumental in passing the Clean Air Act, Endangered Species Act, and continues to advocated for policies focused on environmental justice and sustainability.
