Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality’s 2014 Watershed Conference

Water runs through the lives of all Arkansans, who have always taken pride in the many lakes, rivers and streams throughout our state. Growing industry and population make it increasingly important to ensure that our waterways are clean and safe. Because of our shared appreciation and responsibility for clean water, the theme for ADEQ’s 2014 Watershed Conference is “Connecting Communities, Protecting Watersheds.”

The action begins Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the Best Western Inn of the Ozarks in Eureka Springs, with pre-conference workshops and continues Thursday and Friday with the keynote address, resource fair and poster contest, the awards luncheon, and sessions on urban systems, education, and volunteer recruitment and retention.

The event is open to professionals and volunteers who work to protect the state’s water, as well as those interested in starting or joining a watershed volunteer group. Participants can register until Nov. 3; registration fees are $60 for the conference only, $25 for the pre-conference sessions only and $80 for both.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

Game Day Challenge Recycling

Last year nearly 83% of all game day waste at Razorback Stadium was diverted from landfills. The University of Arkansas placed 8th in the nation and first in the SEC during the Environmental Protection Agency’s Game Day Challenge. The friendly competition is a great way to advance sustainability measures that directly affect our campus. Help us become the first college in the SEC to reach zero waste by volunteering on game day.

Cobblestone Project’s 3 Bags in 2 Days

Cobblestone Project strives to create a community without need by restoring dignity to our neighbors with small acts of kindness.  3 Bags in 2 Days addresses the issues of hygiene that those who cannot provide for themselves may need to be comfortable in society and to change their station in life.  Since it was founded 5 years ago, we have given out over 11,000 bags to our neighbors in NWA.  We hope to continue this outreach with your help.

In partnership with International Paper, Cobblestone Project will launch a product drive to benefit 500+ individuals who will attend the Hope Event 2014. The Hope Event serves veterans, homeless and those in need in Northwest Arkansas.  The event takes place on October 23rd at CUMC on Dickson Street and will include flu shots, give-away bags with hygiene items from 3 Bags in 2 Days, health screenings, haircuts and other necessary services that our neighbors need to restore dignity. Several volunteers are wanted to help during the event.
