Hello! My name is Jesse Kloss and I am a junior political science and journalism (Ad/PR) major with a music minor. I am from Beebe, Arkansas, which is a small town close to Little Rock. I play tenor saxophone in the Razorback Marching Band, the HogWild Band, and the Wind Symphony here on campus. I also enjoy playing piano and I am learning guitar. I sing in the Trinity UMC church choir. I played in a Christian rock band for 7 years. Music is a nice break from politics for me. I am an ASG Senator for Fulbright college and I love serving on campus. I studied abroad in South Africa during the May intersession. I worked as an intern for Arkansas Lieutenant Governor Tim Griffin this past summer and did a good deal of communications-related work such as press releases, media advisories, constituent letters, drafted op-eds, etc. I haven’t written many stories because my focus has been on political science until this semester, but I once wrote a piece for my local newspaper about a trip I took and they printed it on the front page which was undoubtably my proudest high school moment! I am going to be working in Washington, D.C. this summer, and I hope to move there after attending law school. I took this class because I think that being able to not only work with data, but understand how the data can be applied and what information can be drawn from the data are pertinent to not only journalists writing stories, but also to someone interested in politics because data drives policy. We don’t know what the issues are without numbers, so I look forward to learning how to assess and use data to draw conclusions and make a difference based on the conclusions.
