The new wave of a generation that trusts graphics and data in a story more than simple writing has created a great responsibility for journalists dabbling in this form of reporting. Even knowing how important accurate data is, I wouldn’t have guessed at some of the precautions outlined in these articles. One thing I noticed is the need for constant checking and double-checking of the input of data and the math that accompanies. Another interesting thing I noticed was the common mistake of not checking the source of the data and what agenda those taking the information might have had. As journalists, we have to train ourselves to mistrust all information not yet verified. A training that isn’t so natural for some of us but is hugely important especially in data journalism.
