Exercise 2: Analyzing Change
8.27.17
1) How much would an in-state student expect to pay in total tuition, room and board for the 2016-2017 school year? How has that changed in the last year on a percentage change basis?
University of Arkansas: total of $24,302, which is a 3.4 percent increase in the past year
University of Missouri: total of $25, 916, which is a 7.2 percent increase in the past year
2) How much would an out-of-state student expect to pay in total tuition, room and board for the 2016-2017 school year? How has that changed in the last year on a percentage change basis? How does that differ from in-state students?
University of Arkansas: total of $38,650, which is a 5 percent increase in the past year and $14,348 more than the total for in-state students
University of Missouri: total of $42, 290, which is a 6.1 percent increase in the past year and $16, 374 more than the total for in-state students
4) Which category increased the most from the 2016-2017 school years? Raw change? Percent change?
University of Arkansas: Out-of-state tuition and fees increased the most. There was an increase of $1,342 or 6.1 percent increase.
University of Missouri: Other on campus fees increased the most. There was an increase of $1,014 or 27.1 percent increase.
5) Write a lead for a story based on your analysis.
Even after an increase in out-of-state tuition and fees over the past academic year, (**I would simplify this introductory phrase a bit to hep with clarity) the University of Arkansas charges out-of-state students nearly $4,000 less than the University of Missouri in Columbia charges out-of-state students.
6) What other information and/or sources would help you finish this story?
I would like more information on the amount of scholarship money each school gives to out-of-state students. The University of Missouri in Columbia charges their out-of-state students more, but they may disperse more scholarship money to those students, which could offset the difference.
Andrea – Good job here. The numbers are solid. I made a tweak to your lede, so check that out. Excellent question for following up on the data. The spreadsheet is good.
