- New Precision Journalism
- How does a journalist write effective stories on a topic that are unknown by the journalist, such as insurance or taxes, without sounding ignorant?
- How to “bargaining theory” and a “zero-sum game” work together to produce journalism?
- I really liked how it gave case studies that explained the various methods used and put them in journalistic reference along with realistic experiences.
- Class Matters
- I agree with the opinions of the NYT authors in that class maintains its importance in todays society. Class means more than just economic status, but rather represents a way of living. Class contains educational status, race, and social standing rather than just an income b racket; this keeps it relevant in discussions about income inequality.
- Interview
- Unfortunately due to scheduling conflicts I was unable to find a time to go to the Iron Skillet when a waitress would have time to sit and talk with me. I have it on my calendar to go Monday in the middle of the day to get the accurate amount of information.

This is a good question: “How does a journalist write effective stories on a topic that are unknown by the journalist, such as insurance or taxes, without sounding ignorant?”
–The short answer is — work your butt off and do a crash course on the particular topic. This is what we do – dive into subjects, read deeply on the matter, interview people and develop an expertise as quickly as possible. I had to teach myself the banking beat when I was at the AP. I brought home everything related to banking and studied on the weekends. It was nuts and more than a bit bewildering, but I figured it out after talking to dozens of people. I made a lot of mistakes and dumb comments but I tried to learn from them and move forward.
I would encourage you to get the interviews going as soon as possible.
Comments on the graphics:
–Percent of families under poverty level.
Nice use of color. I would drag the poverty data to labels and format the percentages.
County names should be simplified to get rid of “county,Arkansas”
–Single mothers and poverty.
I would drag the poverty data to labels and format the percentages.
Make sure to insert the graphic as large or actual size. This is very small to read. The horizontal format may not work for a blog.
–Percent of Families in Arkansas in poverty – female and families.
Both graphics are great. What would be a good way to emphasize the state and national averages? We will discuss annotations in class
