Here are two points I thought were important to know as a journalist:

1. “The data is only as good as how it’s collected.” It’s important as a researcher to understand the limitations of a dataset, especially if it misleads people or misinterprets the meaning of the data. The internet is a way to hold researchers accountable for their findings, enabling them to review their conclusions carefully. I thought this was intriguing– that a researcher must accurately gather and compile, remain thorough and patient throughout the process of interpreting numbers. It’s a mindset that should be at the forefront of researching.
2. “Convey limitations.” Almost every article deliberately hit this point. It’s important to show readers the process behind the results, that they might understand and trust your data as reliable and trustworthy. Conveying limitations to the public also keeps you accountable to double, triple-check your work. And, like Daniel Trielli writes, make a list of what we want to find out. See if there’s a way to resolve any data limitations by asking the right questions and researching the right fields.
