- As someone who has always struggled with math, I found the chart excerpt from Numbers in the Newsroom interesting because it broke everything down step-by-step and made it seem less menacing. I found it interesting that when it comes to numbers and data in journalism that there are a lot of decisions you have to make yourself regarding the data and what you want to use. I’ve never thought about numbers like that, I’ve always assumed everything is black and white and has to be perfectly formulated so it was comforting and surprising to see that I can chose what to use and make decisions based on other reporters/previously published data.
- Both No. 8 and No. 10 stuck out to me on How to avoid 10 common mistakes in data reporting because communicating that I am falling behind or struggling with something has never been my strong suit. I always try to be self reliant and fix every problem I have by myself. As a journalist I know I need to work on communicating any issue I have with my editor right away instead of wasting time trying to fix everything myself. Especially in a topic like data journalism where I don’t have a lot of experience, I need to make sure to ask for help.
I agree that Numbers in the Newsroom is a great and useful book. Go out and buy a copy:
