I first tried to link the data to the zip code sheet. I copied and pasted the zip code info into the workbook with the crime data. I made sure all entries had a zip code so it would line up properly, and I then tried to be creative and copy the zip code into the cities and counties columns on the zip code sheet without overriding the zip codes already in the cells. I attempted this and it copied over the cells, and I googled it and this just did not pan out for me. I was planning to then upload this to Tableau and do the connection for the two sheets and hope that it would recognize the names and zip code combo cell. (little too ambitious in hindsight).

I originally linked the two sheets within Tableau before I really thought about it and selected agency and zip, but obviously this was an error flag because it doesn’t recognize which zips go with which counties/cities. That’s why I then tried to do the combo cell thing. I thought about doing multiple fields on the connection but figured out I needed to alter the data in excel before it would link properly in Tableau, but couldn’t figure out how to do it.

I then added a zip code column to the crime data and re-uploaded the zip code sheet to the workbook. I tried to vlookup for the zip code data, and I just got error messages every time I tried to do it. I googled tutorials on vlookup to brush up on it and I couldn’t figure out where my error was. I had trouble remembering the difference between lookup value and col index number with the vlookup function. (still not sure)

I attempted to separate the cities data and mess with the map options but I don’t think I separated the data properly.

I tried 🙁
