Incorrect: Out-of-state tuition rose $4,008 from 2014-2015 to 2017-2018 at the University of Arkansas, a 19.7% increase, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

5. Write a lead for a story based on your analysis.

Tuition for out-of-state students at the UofA increased by 16 percent in the past four years, with out-of-state students now expected to pay $4,008 dollars more than they did in 2014-2015, according to the National Center for Education Resources

6. What other information and/or sources would help you finish this story?

How do out-of-state students feel about paying more to go to the UofA? Especially since it seems they have been paying the bill for Gov. Hutchinson’s request for a flat tuition in Arkansas. I’d want to talk to them about it, as well as talking to administration about how and why they choose to raise or lower out of state tuition. How closely do they monitor the percentage of Arkansan students compared to other states? Do they have an ideal ratio? Aren’t they incentivized to advertise to other states because those students will pay higher tuition?

Excellent questions

Analysis of Data: The data clearly shows that tuition and fees for out-of-state students have risen more quickly than those for in-state students. You can see that out-of-state tuition and fees has risen 16 percent in the past four years, while in-state has risen only nine. Room and board are constants, although I’m skeptical of their estimate for off-campus housing being the same as on-campus. Which residence halls/apartments are they basing these numbers on?

It’s also interesting to note the sharp decline in the price of books and supplies, approximately 34 percent in the past four years. Strange, eh? Maybe this reflects a move towards e-books and openstax-style open source textbooks instead of hard copies that tend to be expensive. Or maybe it reflects the increased use of websites to find cheap used textbooks, including Amazon. That could be a backing statistic for another story about textbooks, since the prices and usefulness of college textbooks are always hot topics for students.
